All sensible. Just make it clear to CEC that whatever goes in is not (and can't ever be) a definitive list.

Has the Spokes planning group discovered email yet?

"The existing stands (3) are pathetic, hidden in a corner and on a rollaway slope."

Perhaps a candidate for removal?

The space in front of SJC is of course "private".

I'm pretty sure the Centre management refused to put some there - though that was a while ago.

I used to just put my bike on the railings, until I was told not to by 'security'.

They seemed to think the three on the slope were fine - I don't!

More racks on roads.

Time to visibly take away more car parking spaces NOT pedestrian space.

Whether that's by just putting bike parking on 'road space' or on new build-outs will depend on individual locations.

Presumably 'historic' build-outs where done for 'good reason' (other than space for bikes).

It seems likely that in some cases bike parking may inhibit pedestrian 'desire lines'.

That said, there are places - eg Forrest Road near MMW - where well placed racks would stop some 'jaywalking' which causes daily conflicts with legitimate cycling.

Though of course that will all be addressed when the QBiC deals with the MMW - Princes Street section...

CEC does need to do a proper audit of whether existing bike parking is in optimum places.

And perhaps try to assess whether it's short term or long term - with the potential for theft and also bikes being abandoned.

It would be nice if all bike parking had dedicated CCTV, but that is unnecessary - however I assume there are places with a 'history' of theft (Filmhouse?) that might be worth considering.

In the past one of the 'barriers to cycling' was theft. People who had their bikes stolen often didn't replace them.

Maybe this has changed with people realising they need a decent lock (and not leaving expensive bikes in public).

Or perhaps the cheap chainstore bike (and maybe the Bike Station) has made it less of a trauma(?)

Could do with a large sheffield rack outside the Princes St entrance to the St James Centre. The existing stands (3) are pathetic, hidden in a corner and on a rollaway slope.

I agree with Crowriver that the Central Library on George IV Bridge needs more cycle parking.

Crichton Street could do with more. They added some racks on the corner of the street a month or two ago but they always seem full and there's space for dozens of racks on the unusually wide pavement outside the Informatics building (streetview) - and of course lots of demand for them.

Bike parking provision in Marchmont is already great - but they are always busy (victim of cycling success in that area !) so more Cyclehoops (particularly around the Co Op / Sainsburys on Marchmont Road), a trial of a pump and more cyclehoops near Eddies Fish shop

I would proposed that - citywide - on key streets (Leith Walk, Dalry, Brunsfield, Tollcross, Newington etc) where there are lots of shops/tenements that every second street sign / pole has a Cyclehoop installed - a bit aspirational, but why not?

Racks near the Usher Hall are very handily located. Also very popular, though there's usually a space left...

Racks outside local libraries (eg. MacDonald Road, Portobello) are always useful.

Cyclehoops at top end of Easter Road are a real boon when shopping.

racks beside the York place entrance to the st James centre ared good but I think that's because no one in their right mind would cycle there.......

Thanks for these. Following the rule that it shouldn't always be complaints, is there anywhere that you think that the parking is good. For instance, near the Filmhouse has improved with those stands at the corner of Festival Square.

Agree with above, would add the following:

Tesco at the foot of Leith Walk/Easter Road could do with proper Sheffield stands.

Portobello Prom could use an extra batch of cycle racks somewhere, maybe near the kids' playgrounds.

Cyclehoops needed at Cadzow Place (near Safari Lounge, Eastside Bikes).

Cyclehoops would be good too on Montrose Terrace, near the Just The Ticket cafe on the corner of Abbeymount, and near local shops on the southern side.

Tollcross is a bit bereft of cycle parking until you get to Cameo. Maybe cyclehoops near Central Hall? There are railings but often full of bikes!

May be no space, but more racks or cyclehoops needed on George IV Bridge near Central Library/National Library. Existing racks, railing, etc. always full!

Calton Hill/Regent Road: quite a few bikes locked to signposts/lamp posts outside Scottish government building, could do with cyclehoops? Also at the former road access to Calton Hill itself, near old Royal High School: perhaps a rack there? Or even one at the top of Calton Hill on the old turning circle or nearby? Popular destination, also has an art gallery, observatory, etc.

Cockburn Street: can't recall if has cyclehoops now, but would be most useful if not.

Agree with many of those. Leven street/Bruntsfield Pl is quite lacking. what about the corner of Barclay Terrace, near Pedals? surely there's room for a couple of sheffields on the build out there?

Spokes Planning Group is sending this list of proposed cycling racks to Chris Brace, the Projects Officer (Cycling) with the City of Edinburgh Council.

Has anyone got any more to add? It's being sent on 10th November.

Cycle racks
Sainsbury's Metro Fountanbridge
Tesco Haymarket
Tesco Roseburn Street
Co-op Haymarket Terrace
Scotmid Saughtonhall Drive
Tesco Fountainbridge
Murrayfield Ice ring
City Art Centre (there use to be two Sheffield racks but have recently been removed)

Cyclehoops for signposts
Fruitmarket Gallery
Darnaway Street / Wemyss Place (there are quite a few office and residents don't like people leaving bikes on railings)

In Zurich there's a public bike pump. Should we propose to have some of these to be installed for trial e.g Waverley or Haymarket? Would do you think?

Public Cycle Pump
