But when the price of oil falls, pump prices drift down like a feather.</em>"</p> <p>"<em><u>While no research supports this</u>, the thought of this effect creates ill feeling</em>", he will say. </p> <p>Of course Mr Alexander is overlooking the fact that the cost of crude oil is only one part of the equation when it comes to cost of petrol/diesel, and if the former falls by 25%, the latter will only ever come down by ~6% as his department is responsible for the (fixed) duties that are a major component of the pump prices.</p> <p>But why let the facts get in the way of some more pro-motoring populism - even where <u>no research supports this</u>? </p>
