As well as LB's tip, in the big preview screen there's a little volume button. Click on that and click on the little speaker (between Auto and the volume slider) to mute everything. You'll see an audio spectrum below each clip. If so, you should have three panes - your raw footage, a larger playback window and an empty area where you drag clips. To create a clip, click at the start point and drag along the length of the clip you want to create. A yellow box should surround the clip. You can trim the start and end points by grabbing the thicker ends of the clip and dragging them backward or forward as you need. When you've got it the length you want, click and hold and then drag the clip into the empty space at the bottom. You can keep doing that, placing one clip at the end of the previous and then you can drag transitions into the spaces to join the clips together.
