Even if you do securely attach your bike with multiple locks there's no guarantee of safety in the open. A colleague had his entire MTB stripped of everything that would come off the frame.

My commiserations, it's a heartache I've thankfully yet to experience!

Sorry to hear that.

It's a good idea to lock around the wooden banister of the staircase. It's actually a lot harder and more time consuming to saw through a wooden railing, than to break a brittle cast-iron balluster (the upright metal bit of the railing)

Well, I'm not sure. I found the chain/lock I used open but apparently undamaged. I guess it is possible that I didn't locked it fully, or that they somehow manage to pick the lock open (probably not the best quality lock?), so, I might be to blame. I'll never know... I couldn't use my U-lock because there's too many bikes laying around in the staircase. Some of them are definitely abandoned. When I get a new bike, I'll definitely try to remove them and secure mine with a U-lock (or 2!) to the railing. Having said that a year or 2 ago, my neighbour's bike was stolen, although attached securely to the railing. They simply sawed off the railing (in full daylight!).

Sorry to hear that @gowgowuk. Edinburgh tenement ironwork is notoriously brittle - take it they broke the upright with a hammer and scarpered as usual?

Infuriating. Bike thieves should be tethered naked on Middle Meadow Walk for a couple of nights.

Sorry to hear that... I had been considering whether or not to continue locking mine in the secure rack at work (which is far less convenient than a lot of other racks) now that it is looking a bit less new, but I think that I will continue to do so given your unfortunate news :(

Hi,

Not sure if it's worth posting here but you never know!
My bike was stolen last night. It was attached to the stairs bannister railing in my tenement ground floor staircase. Here is a picture. It's a fairly new Charge Grater 3. Perl grey/pink colour. Sufficiently unusual to be noticed. It has a Bikeregister etching number and I recently replaced the handlebar grips with bright fluorescent yellow contour ones.
Thanks
