I found the chain/lock I used open but apparently undamaged. I guess it is possible that I didn't locked it fully, or that they somehow manage to pick the lock open (probably not the best quality lock?), so, I might be to blame. I'll never know... I couldn't use my U-lock because there's too many bikes laying around in the staircase. Some of them are definitely abandoned. When I get a new bike, I'll definitely try to remove them and secure mine with a U-lock (or 2!) to the railing. Having said that a year or 2 ago, my neighbour's bike was stolen, although attached securely to the railing. It was attached to the stairs bannister railing in my tenement ground floor staircase. Here is a picture. It's a fairly new Charge Grater 3. Perl grey/pink colour. Sufficiently unusual to be noticed.
