Thanks, I didn't realise that the loop under the bridge wasn't a sealed road. I've looked for a good route to Hawes Pier a couple of times and that would be far better than anything I've used so far.

On dark winter mornings heading into Edinburgh

I drop down under the bridge at the control tower, then up Stewart Terrace and along Station Road

Very quiet route if you're around before the school run starts

Sorry to hear of more riders falling off. I'm thinking of changing to the CX bike and winter tyres early as they cut through the mulsh and provide better grip.

For me I come home (from Edinburgh) through Dalmeny, right down to the Dalmeny Train st (Station Road) and then up Burgess Road and Left and Right onto Viewforth. Its faster as I have seen, following then over taking other cyclists as I approach Dalmeny village, and carrying on through to Scotstoun Ave, only having to over take them again, as I climb the FRB.

As for the ride to work, I'll head along Viewforth (glass isn't that bad) and then up to and along Scotstoun Ave or follow the Route 1. This avounds the more direct and faster B800 and that right where I came off.

Cooncil did say they'd 'resolved my problem' in an email, but I notice my winter bib tights haven't been repaired so assume they meant 'sanding the road surface'. I don't know as I didn't ride home that way. This morning I was a little sore and took the bus.

No bath as we only have a shower, but wine and Dave sounds good. When can you visit Dave? :O)

I've actually come off using the 'official' NCN1 route through the housing estate due to frost. Reason being those roads are not gritted and not used as much as main traffic coming past the Shell and down towards the Tesco Roundabout. Its a main road so less likely to be affected by ice/frost.

@beano - yeah that's the bit.

I don't really get people smashing glass anywhere to be honest. Or people who let their dogs leave large sticks in the middle of cycle paths or kids who stategically place them in the middle of the pathso you have to veer into the wet slippy leaves at the side of the path.

well, you know I said on this thread I went via the B800 to spend more time off road...

...came off myself on the little path from the old railway line at Newbridge down to Lochend road.

Luckily had a soft landing and will probably be limited to bruising on the upper arm and thigh. The worst part was re-opening a grass-sledging wound on the opposite ankle which had just healed. Apart from that and looking like a mud monster when I arrived at work, I've got off lightly.

I came off at the Tesco roundabout in South Queensferry on Tuesday evening. Felt the rear wheel slip away and knew I was going down, bent the rear hanger, ripped shorts and shredded leg. Luckily I'd parked at the bridge depot so only had a few hundred yards to go to the car.

I'm also thinking of the 'round the houses' route

@beano - i'm not a fan either but i got put off the other way by the amount of glass that i saw going past the park. The other alternative is to go down Stewart Terrace and then climb up the access ramp to the bridge.

I'm yet to work out the best line round that roundabout. Currently take it quite tight to the inside as i feel i would need to lean into it more if i take it wider and potentially increase the chances of a slide.

I currently take the roundabout going south but going north take the scenic route along the "official" route 1. If it is dry and light I may take the roundabout both ways but going North it is always scary and traffic too fast and impatient coming up to the garage turn off so not worth the risk in the dark and damp.

As Beano noted there often isn't much time between the routes as although the roundabout seems faster you can get stuck waiting and then stuck again getting to the garage turnoff if traffic is impatient. I have certainly arrived at the bridge before other cyclists who have taken the roundabout several times when I have taken the scenic route... It is pot luck and a matter of seconds so the safer route wins for me at this time of year.

I hope your knee heals quickly DaveC. Glad it wasn't worse as that is a horrible place to come off.

@paddyirish - I have, on a number of occasions, timed two routes from Scotstoun Av. to bridge:

(1) left at Scotstoun, roundabout, shell garage, bridge

(2) right at Scotstoun, left into Viewforth Pl., then past the park and onto bridge (NCN1 route I think)

(1) was 2 mins, (2) was 2 mins 15s and there was a bit of waiting in both.

I've decided just to go with (2); even if I have to wait to turn right there's less traffic to contend with IMO.

Another who doesn't like the roundabout - coming home along the B800 round the roundabout and getting to the Shell Garage is not pleasant at the best of times and with the roadworks, it will slow down the cars, but add to drivers' impatience...

Tough luck and a speedy recovery - Beano on the rubbish cycling thread mentioned a slip in SQ this morning. Worth comparing notes?

When going in via the A90, heading Southbound I'd follow the route you've taken, but Northbound I go for acsimpson's compromise. The Pure route 1 may not be gritted when it gets really cold.

At the minute I'm going via Kirkliston and A8 as I spend more time off road, which makes for a more relaxing ride.
