someone linked me a youtube video to that lot yesterday - Pope My Ride. It's a big publicity stunt by Paddy Power bookies. Got a pretty accurate representation of the popemobile though!

Now, who else can we invite to get the potholes filled, the roadworks taken away and scare the drivers off the road?

Good game... good game...

I tried but failed! Didn't take my bike out. Thought lowracer might be too radical for the day. (Being a bike made in the Netherlands... one country that will not be on the Papal tour route!)

Disappointed that we didn't have more police on bikes.

More police than spectators on Lothian when i walked by one of my colleagues was getting sandwiches when he went passed no more than two or three people deep at the time.

My peaceful walk along the canal though was totally ruined by the choppers over head.

It was a bit quieter on the roads this morning heading West out of town, but more like summer holiday quiet than there being an exceptional event afoot. Thoroughly uneventful ride, only point of note being a gent at Haymarket on a silver MTB with one of those kids bikes you clamp onto the seat post (don't know the technical term, you know what I mean, the ones without a front wheel) trying to hold a phone conversation and pedal his long vehicle at the same time. No sign of the kid, presume it fell off a couple of miles back.

I'd like to offer thanks to the pontiff for arranging for the headwind to drop to a more tolerable level. I'd also like to thank him for arranging to have the hole where Corstorphine Road meets Roseburn Terrace filled in, after sitting open and unattended for about a month (with a mocking sign apologising for the "essential gas mains work") and causing the bus lane to be blocked. He must have a direct line from the Vatican to Clarence HQ.

Quite nice seeing Morningside Road and the Glasgow Road at Haymarket completely free of parked cars.

A road sweeping truck was on Morningside Road making things look nice for his holyness. Mind you, makes sense to get in there while there are no parked cars.

Fencing had been put in at the narrow bits near Churchhill to keep those annoying peds from straying onto the road.
Personally I hope that he'll be waving at empty pavements as he drives past.

Couple of policemen on the platform at Haymarket looking bored.

"It's certainly the case that a remarkably number of people drive less than two miles. "

I wonder how many people have walked instead of taking the bus, there were a few in my office who decided that the bus was too risky if the traffic was bad and resolved to walk.

George Street is back to being bus playground and was quite tricky for bikes an hour ago. The Bike Station's setup was pretty quiet, almost as though everyone was just staying home, but it might just be people delaying their journeys.

West of Haymarket, and south of Lothian Road on the Bruntsfield-Tollcross alignment, it was business as usual. Enjoy it while you can!

Yep, I also set a (MTB) record time coming in through the city centre.

Don't know where all the commuters went, but basically nobody was driving in from the south side - I'd say about 1/3 of usual traffic volume on the bridges.

On the downside I realised how much slower my MTB is than the lowracer, but on the upside I got a fantastic workout!

"on 16 September millions watched on TV as Pope Benedict travelled along Princes Street as part of an official visit to Scotland"

Remember - St Andrew Square will be open from 8am to 6pm, and is providing secure cycle parking, so you shouldn't have to worry about finding a bike parking space at that end of town. Dr Bike will also be hand from 8am - 12pm, servicing bikes for free.
