@fimm, while participation in cross has grown massively over the last couple of years in general, it's just exploded for the women's races. Big big fields. And young Isla Short is an undoubted star of the future. Only 17 or 18 I think, that was her second Scottish title, and she's already competed on the world stage in XC mountain biking.

@steveo, I need to drag you to done more of these, after all, you take better photos than my father in law ;)

LOL @Darkerside

Incidentally, the only other Standard I've done was at Knockburn. The lochan there was built specifically for triathon, I'm told. That course is rather more challenging that the Duridge Bay one! I must go and race there again (we have friends in the area).

Looks like a decent sized woman's field?

My first Standard distance tri happened to be the British Standard distance championship race that year. It was held in Duridge Bay country park in Northumberland and I picked it because it had a nice lake swim, a flat bike and run and was just down the road from where my sister lives.

I knew there wouldn't be an issue with it being the championship race & there would be plenty of other people just taking part.

I suspect that the (quite reasonable) decision to hold the race somewhere other than in the south of England meant that the field was a bit thinner than sometimes, always more obvious for women than men. In the W20-40 category (which I was at the time) I was nowhere. However, this being a championship race, they were handing out prizes in 5 year age categories (quite usual in tri, in Ironman for example you get a position relative to your 5-year age group). Anyway, there were only 4 women in the 35-39 age group... I was second. So, slightly embarassingly, I have a sliver medal from my first ever Standard distance race!

Having been used to a field of 60-70, and more, it was slightly intimidating to be in amongst only 30 other riders. It would appear that tagging this round the actual Championship, rather than part of the series, may have made my fellow tail-enders think this wasn't a race for them. So with two DNFs, I came round at the very back-end, nabbing 29th place. So, y'know, I'm 29th best cyclocrosser in the country. Officially.

Yep, at series events there are Under 8, Under 12, Youth, and Junior events. It's a really big thing, get the kids into it, and they love it cos it's an excuse to get muddy. And yeah, that's one aspect I like about it, never far from other riders, even if they are coming up to lap you, which just makes you feel part of the race no matter what.

Guy I was out with on Sunday saying lot of kids being allowed to muck around too? I might have picked this up wrong? He was very positive about what sounded like the lochgelly event. Much talk of never looking that far behind the winners as you just get lapped and everyone very friendly.

Not local, up at Knockburn Loch near Banchory in Aberdeenshire. And remarkably I'll be riding.

I've raced two of the series events this year. At Irvine I came dead last, though lost the best part of the first lap when stopping to comfort a guy who had come off and broken his ankle while another rider went to get a Marshall. At Lochore by Lochgelly the course was somewhat different - very flat, but insanely muddy, and I improved my showing by six places.

Sunday should be interesting, and I still find it a bit weird that I'll be riding in an actual national championship (for someone who as a kid loved sport but was a weird skinny unfit, this competing lark as a whole is a little odd).

Cross as a whole seems to be growing and growing, and I can see why. It's such a friendly, inclusive, supportive (if you realise someone shouting at you that you should try harder to catch the person in front is being supportive) sport. And mullets like me can ride in the same event as someone who has ridden track, or road, or MTB in the commonwealth games....
