I found it quite daunting - all those bikes, and everyone's going quite quickly. But amazing https://cityexile.wordpress.com/2013/02/23/cycling-in-copenhagen/

I did Copenhagen first, then Amsterdam, and my written thoughts at the time, after the Dutch experience, surmised: "It's hard to put into words, but the phrase 'organised chaos' springs to mind more readily when thinking of cycling in Amsterdam. Copenhagen is a ballet; Amsterdam a rave."

I absolutely loved riding in Copenhagen in the way that it was effortless, and brought to mind that line of there not being 'cyclists' in Copenhagen, but Copenhageners who ride bikes. You don't really have to think about it. My wife (who hates the roads here and will only cycle intermittently) had no issues whatsoever with bikes being the way to get around over there. I remember it feeling odd to have a car go past, indicate to turn in ahead of me, then stop and wait for me to go by before turning in.

The cars turning left or right and having to give way to peds is the same as I'd come across in France, and while disconcerting as a Brit ped you get used to it and it seems to work.

Had the pleasure of meeting, speaking to (and drinking with, naturally) both Messrs Copenhagenize and Amsterdamize, and they give really interesting insights into the local cycling scene (and I needed that to 'get' Amsterdam).

Thoughts on Amsterdam

So I had a rainy weekend cycling in København.

The cycle paths go where you need them to go, wide, smooth and drains pretty well; no major puddles. The bus stop bypasses are very good

Light controlled junctions are an interesting one, they are typically two phases where cars bikes and walkers go at the same time inline with one street. Cars turning left or right have to give way to bikes and peds. I guess that right hooks are less likely to happen because a driver is more likely to expect bikes along the cycle path. The consistent infrastructure is good.

Compared to Dutch junctions I do feel more exposed, the stop line is much further back, behind pedestrian crossings and you typically don't have a free right turn. When you're walking, you typically wait less than a UK junction because of the two phase system.

Who else has been there? Any thoughts?
