Oddly, though, I'd spread my belongings generously across the changing room on the assumption that I'd be the only person using it, but when I returned from the shower I found that Hankchief had appeared as well and was trying to fit his stuff into the small space that wasn't occupied with mine.</p> <p>It was nice to see him. On the towpath at 0730, between Meggetland and the bypass I saw<br /> <ul><li>three pedestrians (two striding along on a purposeful commute, one feeding the ducks)</li><li>one slow jogger starting the new year as they mean to continue</li><li>zero bikes.</li></ul></p> <p>The temptation to ride along in a dream enjoying the tranquility was very high. I had to keep reminding myself that everyone else on the route would expect it to be deserted as well, and that I still needed to concentrate in case they came dreamily round a corner in front of me. </p> http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=14172#post-176740 Fri, 02 Jan 2015 03:52:48 +0000 Tulyar 176740@http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/ <p>At least the helicopter seemed to be maintaining a height that aligned with the safe operating envelope (ie 1000ft or over).</p> <p>It would have flown over from Glasgow to do this (but may have refuelled elsewhere).</p> <p>Helicopter pilots have a 'do not fly in this zone' restriction that ensures the machine can be slammed into autorotate in the event of engine failure. This basically plots out to prohibit hovering at less than 1000ft and that height reduces if there is forward speed. </p> <p>A lot of the work that this very costly machine does can be done using a much smaller and lighter drone with a remote TV camera fitted. If the drone suffers a failure there is no crew on board at risk (Glasgow has had 2 fatal Police helicopter crashes), and the smaller size and weight also delivers less risk of damage/injury on the ground.
