New bushes ordered and plans afoot to reduce slop in the various joints. Time will tell how effective I will be! :-)

Never used a TAL, but I understand that the ones that fit above the rack are best as they track properly.

Thanks all for the input, and special thanks to SRD for providing an EBC tal :-)

Islabike tagalongs seem to get the best reports, but are hard to find as no longer manufactured.

We have an EBC one that works perfectly OK, but I agree with SRD and Hankchief that you need to get the coupling tight to stop it leaning. It's got to be really tight, so that you think the thing won't go round corners.

The saddle on ours is rubbish: too big, a funny shape and clearly uncomfortable for small behinds over anything other than trivial distances (although I've never actually changed it...)

I think you get what you pay for, and the EBC one is at the lower end of the price range.

Our first TAL was a 3rd/4th hand EBC one.

Still worked well enough for a year's commuting.

The thing to watch is how tight you can get the hitch. If it's not tight you will get a waggle as the TAL leans 5-10 degrees one way and then switches to lean the other way.

I assume this isn't so bad on new TALs (or well looked after ones).

To extend the tandem we couldn't use the EBC one as the rear seatpost is at its lowest setting. Fortunately I had seen the future at POP2 where another Helios had a TAL on so I asked what it was.

It was one of these. A Burley Piccolo, which fixes to the rack rather than seat post and is very secure.

It isn't cheap but good 2nd hand ones do come up - I had plenty of time between my pop2 epiphany and needing it, so was able bide my time to get a bargain from Aberdeen.

After my recent studded tyre debarcle I went back to my old TAL and it was a real shock to both me and Hankchief Jnr just how bad the waggle was.

You're very welcome to our Ebc tagalong if you can fix the 'bushings' so that it doesn't go sideways. Otherwise in good shape. Stored inside. One careful girl rider.

We bought it in the NY sale 4 years ago, but it only got much use for the first two years.

As the title says really, Smudge minor is nearly 3 so getting big for a kiddie seat, what's the consensus on the best value / most effective tagalong? Or are there any to avoid?
thanks all :-)
