There is after all no bus services which serve the city centre, nor any car parks available on a Sunday.

I'm all for supporting much of the work churches do but I'm not sure why their primary point is about the upkeep of church buildings.

My immortal soul certainly isn't worth £1.20/hour parking fees. As Jesus himself said in Matthew Chapter 18, "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. Unless I have to pay for parking."

"I had a quick look at the 130 page report. Seems to be a plan for further consultation to extend the parking enforcement till 9:30pm every day in the central zones. Not sure where that idea has sprung from."

It was strongly hinted at in the consultation questionnaire. I think "9.30pm or later" might have been the latest option you were given for how late you thought parking restrictions ought to operate. It'll certainly increase permit revenues...

Walked round the city center today. Traffic delays on York Place, Royal Mile, Fountainbridge. Why? Parked cars.

Cowgate must have been about 12 cars parked on the pavement between the bridges. How Street Lane and West Register Street pavements both completely blocked.

Assume that's 'auto correct' for surprised.

Not sure that I am. Was a lot of 'church going objectors'.

This is a neat compromise that may or may not work and can be altered.

"Think as part of the plan the council should be saying that any parking fees collected on a Sunday will be put towards subsidising bus routes on a Sunday for 6 months."

Good idea.

I was thinking LB should offer 1/2 price travel for a few Sundays - or at least 1/2 price family tickets.

It's the opportunities for leisure that make Edinburgh a great place to live, and this should be a priority on Sunday. But the cycle lanes are blocked, you can barely get across the road to visit a cafe, the bus crawls along slower than a walking place, and instead of historic architecture, all you see at street level are cars.

One of the benefits of paid parking on a Sunday is single line restrictions will also apply on Sunday. This will greatly easy bus travel round Edinburgh. Often see Lothian busses having to divert certain routes on a Sunday - like the number 2 on Candle Maker Row.

I've noticed recently that it's the more expensive cars parking in the city centre. Large 4x4, mercs, porsche's etc. What is a £30 fine to them? Wonder if they pay parking fines via Direct Debit?

A couple examples of mad parking on a Sunday. No action from Police or Edinburgh Council. Where are pedestrians supposed to go?

@newtoit the congestion charge boundary when it was proposed in 2004? Was outwith the old city boundary so anyone driving from Balerno to juniper green would have been charged. This was to prevent the displacement you mention. I was in favour but the referendum for the congestion charge was 60 per cent against. As red Ken suspected it would hae been in London andnwhy he didn't give people the choice, seems to have work d in london.

I would stick with this and ring edinburgh from its park and ride terminals inside which you would incur a charge. To be clear this will not happen as it is not a vote winner. Indeed the wiki article on it cites labour losses at an election in 2002 (local govt) as attributed to the charge however the referendum did not occur until feb 2005 so that should have a disputed tag. John Lewis, SNP, west Lothian council, Fife council and maybe Midlothian council all opposed it. Actual vote was more like 75/25 on a 61 per cent return of 250000 ballot papers that were sent out. There was a cheaper charge for the outer boundary in one of the proposals. Also talk of resident rebate.

How about parking fines that are more of a deterrent (ie - at a level where a couple of fines a day per warden would pretty much pay for the cost of enforcement)?

Agree with congestion charging as long as there is allowance for those that NEED to drive in the city, and a reasonable journey time into the city by public transport in all directions. Buses are ok but can be pretty slow; train P&R where possible! However congestion charge would likely put pressure on areas just outside the zone requiring possibly more parking enforcement, residents areas and so on.Also, where would the line be drawn? Jocks Lodge-Craigmillar Crossroads-Cameron Toll-KB-Morningside-Corn Exchange in the south (don't know North Edinburgh well enough to comment on that)?

Charge a near market rate for parking (maybe permit and certainly pay and display)? The most expensive permits at £408 per year are pretty cheap compared to using NCP etc. Why do we subsidise people to park where there isn't room?

Realise some of these are pretty extreme, and I wouldn't necessarily be totally in favour but they could be considered.

Interesting suggestion though, that if we're wanting to disincentive driving into town we should run better Sunday public transport. Sunday buses can already be really busy without additional demand!

Council also very keen to hear about any other revenue generating ideas. If you tried to balance the budget using the sliders parking was the only option for Rev generation.

What about a congestion charge?

Will be interesting if they go through with this. And maybe the bus lane stuff will be used as evidence of driver friendly policy? Obviously the congestion charge idea is just a joke.

Finally! Many parts of the city are actually worse to cycle or drive through on a Sunday than they are the rest of the week.

In Hamburg (and probably other places too), if you have a season card for the public transport system, you can take up to 3 (might even be 4) friends or family with you on the weekend.

It's not like Edinburgh Council have to rack their brains for innovative ideas, they just need to look at what already works well elsewhere.
