Nice to see some of the handcycles etc at the beginning of chdot's video.

I'm very sorry that I could not make it. Hopefully Boyfriend Of Fimm won't want to do that race next year...

I nearly removed all of the video sound, because the monopod and drivetrain was a bit intrusive, but I decided to leave it as an exercise for the viewer. :-)

So much for the 07.30 departure.... Headed off from Kelvingrove Park solo probably the wrong side of 08.10 (left my gloves so turned back).

Looked to be one rider waiting in George Square

Solid riding out along Duke Street and cut over to Edinburgh Road, through Baillieston. Later start meant steadily increasing tailwind and growing % of blue bits of sky as dark grey bits kept moving away in front.

The stiff climb up from Coatbridge to Airdrie, and climbing steps up to the moor top at Forestfield were a bit slow, down to c.5 mph on stiffer bits. First sign of another Glasgow feeder at Caldercruix, just fixed flat. saw him go on to catch up with another rider, and around 6 of us going down the hill to Bathgate where 30+ bikes outside a cafe all heading in.

As my top speed limited by 1 gear I pressed on but did stop for a can of juice. Increasing tailwind meant I was holding 15-20+ mph, and rolled in to Meadows just as the ride setting off.

Just one downside - generally I'm doing urban utility riding 10-12 miles at most across London, less in Glasgow. So 50 miles at one sitting without endurance preparation ... = hot bath. Hip injury (2001) might be causing a grumble which made left side power stroke a bit painful, and put paid to riding back up from Holyrood.

Citylink 900 back. Landed lucky with Stagecoach operated service, & driver I know. Nice one for those paying fares, the £7.50 special offer is no longer sold by the coach driver BUT is still sold at the ticket office....

Now I've met IWRATS, Morningsider and a few more forumites as well - so a useful day.

Good day today. Set off at 8:30am in the pouring rain which subsided within 40 minutes, just 2 of us from Burntisland this year. We met up with a depleted Fife feeder at Dalgety Bay, the weather (or Kinross sportive) has definitely taken the toll on numbers, and the Dalgety Bay contingent were leaving later.

About 10 of us made our way to Inverkeithing where we picked up the cyclist from Elgin (mucho kudos), a rider from Aberdeen, Willie Rennie and a couple others.

By the time we left Queensferry we were still 15, rumours abound that the A90 cycle path was open.... In fairness I think Edinburgh Council were trying to accommodate us because although the works were finished, open was a little overstated as there were 2 vans blocking progress about half way along, we squeezed past and made our way to Silverknowes for another pickup. We were about 25 minutes early so the group split and I led the first group into the Meadows (led is a grand term, I knew the way).

Thanks to POP folks for organising a great day, and to Jimmy Drummond for organising the Fife feeder.

Nice to meet @Uberuce, @SRD, and @PaddyIrish (who bizarrely I've spoken to loads of times on the train but didn't realise was a forumite. Also nice to meet Elgin lady (name memory abysmal), and Willie Rennie took the inevitable slagging in good humor.

Fantastic day! Here's my transcription of the meaty part of the Minister's speech (from Shaun McDonald's youtube video):

"I inherited in year 14/15 the record amount of funding into cycling and I know you would say it is not enough. So my commitment for 15/16, the financial year we have now gone into, has started off the year changing the budget to put in more than the starting point last year. But that's not good enough.

My commitment is that through this financial year that the Scottish Government will spend more on cycling than we did in the record breaking previous financial year. I will aim to do that, to get more resources through the course of the year, to put our money where our mouth is. To invest in infrastructure, so we can grow support in cycling for all the reasons you know better than I about smarter, healthier choices, that cycling is not just seen as a sport but a proper mode of transport, to increase the amount of people cycling"

Here's my take on this:

The planned cycling budget for 2015/16 was less than what the Scottish Government actually spent on cycling in the last financial year (2014/15). However, the Scottish Government has increased the proposed cycling budget for 2015/16 to exceed the initial planned budget for 2014/15 - which was far lower than what it ended up spending during 2014/15, due to pressure from PoP and others.

So, the budget for 2015/16 has been increased, but it is still less than what the Scottish Government actually spent on cycling during 2014/15. The Scottish Government now "aims" to increase the cycling budget during 2015/16, to exceed the actual expenditure of 2014/15.

The clear questions for the Scottish Government are:

Can you set out how much the Scottish Government spent on cycling in financial year 2014/15?
Can you set out how much the Scottish Government is committed to spending on cycling in financial year 2015/16?

It is very important that the budget they set out is cycling specific. Most Scottish Government budget lines confuse "active travel" (walking and cycling) and "sustainable travel" (walking, cycling, electric cars, buses and so on). The budget that the Minister was referring to in his speech actually related to active travel and not just cycling.

Still, what do I know - I'm just an old cynic.

Top event. Well done to all involved in organising POP and all who sailed in her.

Heading home afterwards a foreign accented chap pulled up on his bike beside me at the lights at the top of Broughton Street, pointed at my POP flag and asked "when is this on?". Had to tell him it was two hours ago, or in 12 months' time.

Then got to bottom of Broughton Street and found myself behind a couple of cyclists heading along Mansfield Place. Rearmost was a helmetless female who was making reasonable progress along the fading bike lane. Realised it was Lesley Hinds just as I turned off, so didn't get a chance to tell her to stick with it. If she cycles up and down that stretch through Rodney Street and Canonmills she'll soon get the message that Edinburgh's streets are plenty wide enough for segregated lanes and really do need them in places like that.

Indeed. The fact that the numbers were about the same as last year despite the forecast is testament to that. It felt that the speeches were more compact, to the point and coherent (partly due to the superior amplification) than the previous two years (I missed the first one, sadly).

Just like to say a huge thank you to biketrain, daisydaisy, chug, SRD, BikeFan and Stickman for helping with the Harrison Park Feeder Ride and Stickman (again) for helping with the smaller unfeeder ride.

Notwithstanding a temporary divergence of groups on the way there, we got everyone safely to the Meadows and they seemed to survive the experience.

Anyone know a cleaning company that deals with standing stones? Ideally no-questions-asked...

Glorious day/success all round.

Who sacrificed what to the shadowy powers behind the met office? Whatever deal you made, it was worth it.

Well done organisers! :)
