The collision comes four days after a boy was hit by a car outside Ferryhill Primary School on Groathill Road North.

And sad to say that bit of road is to stay at 30mph.

Seems Lothian Busses has had a large influence on the 20mph zones. Still can't work out why the main road through Juniper Green and Currie are remaining at 30.

Just seen this thread. This is no doubt why we need 20mph limits as widespread as possible. I hope the child recovers.

I found the traffic this morning was queued all the way from the top of Craiglockhart Avenue to the Calder Road, via Inglis Green and Longstone. I have no idea how many cars and vans I overtook (all of them, I think). Fortunately I was using my upright bike and not the torpedo, which would've been just as stuck as the next vehicle.

Of course the CCE 'rule' of "don't speculate" applies here, but k's general observations are valid and apply in many situations where roundabouts are in place for 'traffic flow' reasons.

Quite a lot of people on here were involved in 'persuading' CEC to remove the London Road/Leith Walk one (though that seems to be on hold because of possible tram extension.)

In any case it is more or less a T junction.

Imagine trying to get the Ferry Road one replaced...

The pedestrian crossings at this roundabout are very deliberately placed in such a manner to encourage "the smooth flow of traffic"; far back from the roundabout so that there is a tarmac "reservoir" between the roundabout and the crossing to try and contain vehicles off the rounabout when the lights go red.

What this means is that the crossings are not on a pedestrian desire line (hence all the fencing around the junction to enforce their use) and make people take a time-consuming deviation from their route just to cross the road. It's also a double-stage crossing, with a central island pen for pedestrians, again to keep the traffic flowing but slowing down pedestrians.

Every time you design a junction like this, you have the potential that someone who is running late (or a child, who hasn't got the fear of the road yet driven into them) decides to run out onto the road, only to find a vehicle is coming off the roundabout at a high speed...

That roundabout, with it's wide exits (single lane roads widening out to double or even triple lanes), gentle corners, protected left-turn filter lane, badly placed crossings and miles of "safety" fences belongs back in the 1960s when it was built.

Ah jeeze. It's almost inevitable that would happen given the number of kids that cross that road each day from the estates to the high school, the value the council seem to place on traffic flow round there and the frankly hopeless pedestrian crossings.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Police in Edinburgh attended a road traffic collision involving an 11-year-old child on Bankhead Drive, Sighthill shortly after 8am this morning.

“The child was taken to the Sick Kids Hospital and is in a serious condition.

Traffic solid from Zoo as far as Drumbrae, where I turned off, and solid again up Meadow Place Road. There was a Police "Collision Investigation Unit" Range Rover trying to get up the road with blues and twos on but making slow progress.

Colleague reported it was solid along Calder Road and back into Gorgie (there's been a seperate accident on the City Bypass slip).

When I rode past at a little after 8 this morning there was a child in the road at the crossing just west of the roundabout.

Fingers crossed, but I got a good look and it didn't look hopeful. There were already quite a few people milling about so I didn't stop.

"Key arterial routes are being maintained at 30mph or 40mph so that we can keep cross-city traffic flowing, even though some residents in these areas would have preferred a change to 20mph... inevitably not everyone will be able to get what they hoped for."

Evidently.
