Thanks all. Sounds like a service is required... I surprised myself when I counted up the miles done on it.

Iain/Eastside - Thanks for the offer. Does a service take long? Just thinking of how many days gap in riding it I need to plan for.

@Darkerside - Spiked tyres might be slowly wrecking the bike but all the extra resistance is doing wonders for building up strength.

It'll be those spiked tyres, Hankchief. Not only are they destroying your thumbs, levers, and inner tube collection, they're knackering the hub gear as well.

I blame the extra vibration #definitelyRealScience.

Indeed - this consists of having to annually (we don't do 5k in under a year) squirt some fluid in, suck it out and replace it with the magic Rohloff oil again.

Far and away my easiest maintenance task on a drivetrain!

It sounds like it does need a service. We would be happy to do that for you if you would like to bring the bike along.

I seem to remember seeing photos of a partially serviced hub gear on The Cycle Service's Facebook page so I'm 99% sure that that is what their "hub service" refers to...

I noticed The Bike Service at The Pleasance were advertising hub service. However I would phone first to see if that is hub gear.

Mr G at EBC used to service my nexus 8 but not sure this is permitted now.

The problems you relate were same as I had with nexus 8. Nexus 8 had two separate series of four gears and the jump from 1-4 onto the 5-8 range or vice versa was always the first thing to go. Obvioulsy being stuck in the 5-8 was tricky when came to hills

What's the hive mind's view on this...

My Alpine 8 speed hub has done 4.5k miles in all weathers and is beginning to play up.

When I'm in my biggest gear and try to change down for an upcoming hill, I can press the thumb lever fine but it doesn't drop down. If I play with the up and down levers it eventually changes down. It's done this occasionally but couple of times recently I've still been stuck in the big gear when the hill arrives.

Sticky cable or more serious?

And the tonight have replaced the tube in my rear tyre I was rotating the pedals while it was on the stand and noticed that the wheel rotated backwards when I rotated the wheels backwards.

I assume this means the freewheel is kaput?

Two main questions:

1. Do I need to send the hub somewhere to get it serviced?
2. Could it wait until Easter when the bike isn't in daily service?
