LMFTFY "At the moment, it just comes down to <strike>opinions</strike> cost, I think."

At the moment, it just comes down to opinions, I think. However, I have located the most useful thing I read a while back on the subject, on reddit of all places.

http://www.reddit.com/r/cycling/comments/2luwt1/are_carbon_road_bikes_worth_it/

(read the top comment by stravadarius)

The main bit I take note of is that of torsional stiffness. Cheap carbon bikes won't give you that, and that's ultimately what I would look for when getting a carbon frame.

YMMV.

I deliberately didn't buy a cheap carbon frame when I built up my road bike, as I wasn't convinced it would be much (if any) stiffer than the team alu and I didn't think the weight difference was significant.

It would be nice if there was some kind of standard metric (frame deflection at a certain point with X weight on the pedals in a test rig, or whatever) so comparisons could be drawn.

My understanding is that the frames on carbon framed bikes for £1k are not particularly good. From what I've read, you'd need to shell out at least double that for a bike, and you'd then need to ensure it comes with no more than 105 groupset and R500 or equivalent wheels, so that the bulk of the cash outlay is on the frame.

However, I could have read stuff that was all effectively supplier's articles trying to justify you laying out large(r) amounts of dough.

You'd exepct the margin on own branded bikes to be much better than those of the big manufacturers.

Not really sure about that. The big manufacturers (and the volume own-brand merchants like Planet X and Ribble) will be able to negotiate better deals from suppliers in the Far East because of the sheer size of their orders.

I don't work in the trade though, so it's pure speculation. The reason may be something else entirely.

Possibly a better deal, Ribble currently have the Gran Fondo Carbon bike with ultegra 6800, all for £999. Can also upgrade to electronic shifting for another £400 if feeling flush.

Can actually get the 105 for £285 from Merlin (I'm updating my bike with this as currently worn out my groupset).

Anyone know what the Wraith is like? Would also need to check the wheels were 11 speed compatible.

Looks to me like EBC are no longer selling own brand 'Revolution' bikes from this year onwards. If you select brand = 'Revolution', all the bikes that come up are 2013/2014 models, and all are in the sale. Anyone know any more about that? Maybe the bike market is so competitive now that their margins are too low on these, so once they've shifted the old stock then that's it. Revolution over.

I see from EBC's latest email that their Wraith 14 is on sale for £680 (with 54, 56 & 58 in stock). It comes with FSA crank and Shimano Sora 2 x 9 speed groupset but you can currently buy the new 2 x 11 speed Shimano 105 groupset for as little as ~"298.99 (2015) online currently.

That seems like a lot of bike for under a grand.
