Cyclestreets does indeed use OSM data for its routing. I'd have corrected the error in the data myself earlier in the week, but was very pushed for time. (Chrisfl - thanks for resolving my note on OSM.)

I often see notes on here about Cyclestreets providing an odd routing. It's very often because of minor defects in the OSM data - but in general these errors ought to be becoming rarer. The data is in a pretty good state.

Can I suggest that anyone who isn't currently an OSM geek take a look at two things. First take note of this simple tool for checking out the data behind any openstreetmap based map or routing:
https://blog.openstreetmap.org/2014/12/01/new-query-feature/
With a little thought it should be pretty easy to understand what this all means.

Then take a look at the beginners editing guide from Cyclestreets.
http://www.cyclestreets.net/edit/introduction/

All part of my wish to make OSM geekery part of normal life...

Cheers Chrisfl. I looked the offending part of the bypass up on OSM and saw the changes you made.

I'm still unsure about doing this journey (in any incarnation) entirely by bike in the dark. I did some of it in the car the other week and didn't enjoy that.

@friskiffla - I have done a large chunk of that route before, (Edinburgh Park to Rosewell).

I actually went with the fast route for the first half and the balanced route for the second half.

If I was to go that way again, I might be tempted to go: http://cycle.travel/map/journey/10330 - interesting to note that cycle.travel plans a route all the way into town along the canal, and then straight down and over the bypass.

@acsimpson - I can't see your Edit, but I've applied the change (and checked round for other cases...)

Last time I checked, cyclestreets updates once a week. So it might be up to a week for the change to take affect.

For the OSM geeks: I noticed that the bypass does have the motorroad=yes tag, which implies Motorway like restrictions (bicyle, foot and horse = no, maxspeed=70 mph)

Thanks amir and acsimpson. I think Cyclestreets does use OSM but not 100% sure. If you've corrected it I will check back to see if it changes the journey(hasn't changed yet but maybe later). I've logged it as feedback on cyclestreets too.

Does Cyclestreets use OSM data? That section of the bypass had an unknown status relating to cycles. I've changed that and wonder if it will update in time or not.

There's no cycle path there (though there is just to the south of the bypass - can you catch this going pass Straiton pond?)

The quiet route has one of the most challenging hills in the area (Loanhead to Polton) - I think the latter half of the balanced route is as good as you'll get but the traffic may not be good on the Lasswade Road stretch.

I was just looking into a route from Edinburgh Park to Lasswade, and I noticed that the 'fast' route option appears to go part of the way along the city bypass. Am I right in thinking that this is an error, as cycling is not permitted on the bypass, or am I missing something (e.g. cyclepath alongisde)?
