I saw a seal at Gipsy Brae recently (in the sea)
It was foraging around the breakwater rocks, maybe some of these manmade structures can be good for wildlife.

Good to see this going ahead. Already tricky leaving and entering the extended part as new cycleways/ and walking routes attract more parked cars! the extension will save having to do 180 degree turns through the current chicane where the path finishes at moment.

Last night had a lovely sunset so went out for another spin round after doing tour earlier in day.

This time I managed to access this route to Gypsy Brae - for many years closed off. So in theory you could get onto prom with only one very short bit of road riding from NEPN. Enter at Scottish Gas HQ. Landscaped on either side of burn /drainage ditch. Exit through a gap pulled apart with two weighted oil drums jut above prom.

You can just see in this pic here... Note bashed bollard from stolen vehicle!
Untitled by LaidBackBikes, on Flickr

Once route is open families can do a nice circular route back up to Crewe Toll. Eventually the link through Granton will be built and we'll have connectivity.

I suppose the nature of a coastal path is that it wont be straight. With a huge land reclamation they could cut the corner but I don't think it would be worth it.

Judging by the shape and reinforcement of the coastline, Gypsy Brae and other sections east of this site must be on reclaimed land.

The promenade from Cramond to Granton at the moment must be over 6m wide in places but on a Sunny Saturday you would already struggle to cycle faster than walking pace so a few extra bends aren't going to slow anyone down further.

Progress marches on at a glacial pace.

Too me this looping back and forward, 90 degree bends etc are not exactly pedestrian friendly. Why not extend the existing prom in a straight line? Why not round off the corners more, create diagonals etc?

The simple answer is that you'd end up cycling through a cement depot instead of around the coast. I'll happily do a little detour in order to follow the coast. I think on-the-ground those doglegs wont seem quite so severe, the coast here is a fairly gentle curve.

Connecting the prom at Cramond with NEPN (at least until NEPN is replaced by the tram) - great decision.

I can't really imagine taking kids past all the heavy trucks at the cement works etc. at present. Thumbs up for filling in the missing links!

Well, yes, but.

ThisISEdinburgh - so likely to be some years after this path is in place...

'We are waiting for developer contributions'.

Ace. There will be, presumably, a toucan crossing to join it with the diagonal path from Saltire Square?

This is good news.

An important missing section of the coastal path/Prom.

Of course it will all be in the detail! It's planned to be SIX metres wide which is outstanding for a 'shared use' path.

Presumably it's currently in CEC ownership.

"

This area is currently not in use, it is the edge of the coast with beach on one side and a road on the other. The land is currently wild grass land which is maintained by the City of Edinburgh Council.

Plans have been lodged to extend the Crammond > Granton promenade by 400m.

I've heard that the west section is the only natural non man made part of the shore between Crammond and Musselburgh
