So I finally attended an induction for THW Bike Pool and had a go on an electric bike... They are Scott models of some kind and are good fun to cycle, but rather jerky as the electric power comes in when you start to pedal, but then goes away again, either when you stop pedalling or when the bike reaches its maximum electric power speed. This makes things interesting when approaching junctions if the bike is set to a higher power assist setting, but cycling straight into the wind was especially satisfying.

@Ed1 unfortunately it is currently limited to staff and students, and even then only from Monday-Friday between 10am-4pm:

http://www.transition.hw.ac.uk/get-cycling/cycling-at-heriot-watt-2/transition-heriot-watt-bike-pool-scheme/

I think that these restrictions are for insurance purposes.

I have noticed the electric bikes at heriot watt and wondered what you need to hire one as would like to try one as think would be ideal if they work well. I live near there so go there for coffee sometimes. Can non students hire bikes?

Heriot-Watt University already has a few electric bikes which belong to a bike pool organised by our Transition group, which reminds me that I really should get around to completing the bike pool induction so I can try one.
