"Waverley Steps", 1948, Scottish Home Department. A sort of fly-on-the-wall docudrama-cum-public information film. Regardless of the woodenness of the acting and social attitudes of the time, absolutely wonderful film footage of Edinburgh as it was then.

See how much has changed. Like how smooth the bike ride over the cobbled, traffic and pothole-free streets is. And how little, when the big nob from Moray Place in his motor nearly knocks 2 different pedestrians down with the accelerator to the floor and leaning on the horn!

Not watched it yet, looking forward to it.

But here's a clip from the 50s, perhaps for comparison:

How fascinating. Thank you for that. I was interested to see Murrayfield and Tynecastle.

Not many cyclists, though. I'm pretty certain that if you went out and filmed similar street scenes today, you'd get more cyclists in it.

There's a bit shot from (I think) Grosvenor Crescent looking towards the Episcopal cathedral, where a car takes a corner at speed with flagrant disregard for the female pedestrian. Plus ça change, eh?

The other half was observing how much better central Edinburgh looks without all the modern clutter of street signs and "furniture", endless tagged-on pavement buildouts and road markings.

I particularly like the Porty pool bit at around 5m45s.
