OK the proposed route is now posted on the Capital Trail 220 web page. There are almost 80 people signed up to the mailing list for more information. The Adventure Show has expressed an interest in covering the event. Kerry MacPhee has also shown interest in riding it...

So who else is up for the challenge?

Yes, I might steal that route and the one you posted on the previous page that I can't remember the name of but don't want to go back to now that I've started typing. Sandstone I think.

@Instography

Good call. I'm all in favour of grueling endurance events but opposed to non-mindful cycling, leaving me quite ambivalent as regards audax.

Off-road touring is my preferred form of leisure cycling. Hauling tent, rations and fine wine over hill passes means that fifty miles can be quite a long way to go in one day.

So I may leave the time trial event to the young and over stimulated but steal the route for a three day tour.

That looks like a genuine Surly Krampus of which my Longitude is but a Genesis copy. Though I must say, if those photos are typical of the route I'm half tempted (apart from the 36 hours thing. That's like no fun at all. I'm more of a pub, curry shop, shower and a warm bed every 50 miles (and in that order) kind of Audaxer).

During WWII, punters selected for SOE training had to get themselves to Spean Bridge without money or other external help. If you couldn't do that your selection had been a mistake. Perhaps this is similar?

Iwrats hour the nail on the head. Without knowing the actual route, with just comments of 'most is off road and it'll kind of go around here' not really resolving just what the route and surface are actually like. It's a bit off a blind shot really without more detail!

@Wilmington's Cow I get the feeling there is an MTB v CX thing here and Markus is coming at it very much from an MTB view point... ;-)

I'll talk to him about it, my view that everyone should be welcome to try it, so long as they have the experience to take on such a ride (this one ain’t for beginners).

Kim, check with Markus how he'd view it in comparison to the Three Peaks cyclocross race... I guess it's all really dependant on the actual route, but the locations I've heard mentioned, while sometimes reasonably technical, could, I think, be crossable.

@gembo, nothing annoys me more than thread drift. No wait, that's not right. John Inverdale, nothing annoys me more than John Inverdale - I always get the two mixed up.

@Wilmington's Cow: As I understand it the route is mostly off road with only a few on road link where needed. I seem to remember Markus saying that it might be too challenging for cross bikes. Humm, after some checking he actually said was "with a lot of skills you might be getting away with a cross bike, but I would advise against it!"

That said, I am sure we could think up a variation, with a suitable handicap, to allow the CX crowd to join the fun... ;-) I will suggest it to Markus at our next meeting.

@I were right about that saddle: at the present time Markus has ridden most of the route in sections, but I think he wants to do the whole thing in one go to do a final check and create the GPX file.

Yes, it could be done on the desktop, but some people like to do things the hard way... ;-)

Oh and did I mention that the Adventure Show might be interested in filming it? But as I say it is early days yet.
