"

A BID to prevent a repeat of a legal blunder which saw Britain’s oldest parliamentary building “given away” amid confusion over ownership will cost the city council £250,000 a year.

Officials have warned the revamp of the common good register will be a complex process which could take “several years”.

A probe into costs and timescales was launched after we revealed how Parliament House, near St Giles’ Cathedral, was in part “gifted” to the Faculty of Advocates after council officers told the Scottish Government they did not know who owned it.

"

Someone has added a comment -

"

Looking on the bright side, at least the Faculty of Advocates seem likely to maintain it properly, and to use it for its historic purpose, and unlikely to flog it off for a luxury hotel.

Rent free, advocates maintained structure. All in article. Scottish ministers involved then advocates saw their chance. Council sleeping.

Land belonged to the Catholic church, but after reformation ownership more complicated. Again all in article.

Well worth reading the article as the original author whilst being an authority on the common good is kept on his toes by his readers.

If it was being rented mesuspects it may have been on a peppercorn basis anyway.

It's probably for the benefit of the structure if the cooncil no longer owns it. They'd only do something stupid like lose it. Oh, wait...

What I am not sure about is what is the benefit of it being owned by the council. Is there rent due?

EDIT: As you were, chdot was commenting at the same time.

"just that in the long term scale of things there have been transactions in both directions for benefit of city and country."

Let's hope that all comes out too, might be useful for plot (see my previous e-m!)

Maybe a film...

Of course the actual ownership of an actual (old) building might actually be a financial liability for CEC - especially if no-one has actually been paying rent.

All a bit odd.

No doubt someone will turn it into a novel.

Wonder if Deacon Brodie will be in it.

"My mother (an advocate)" - I'm sure she'll understand that (legally) it's a bit suspect for ownership to be denied by one council official, and somehow this becomes 'fact'.

"

“The council didn’t even know that it no longer owned it. It just realised one day that something had gone very horribly wrong. Quite why remains unclear since the history of the building is very well documented.”

They have a permanent cafe in the signet library now and they do weddings. Something odd has happened to the writers to the signet maybe the faculty of advocates is opening a nightclub in Parliament House?
