DRAW LINES Use draw lines when the roads aren’t quite what you want (or when Google Maps doesn't know about them yet). Just click along your path and we’ll connect the dots, even it it means going right through the park or down a street that might be closed to traffic.

"I quite like bikehike since you can see an OS map next to the usual."

Yeah that's quite interesting/useful.

Says there's an option to use the Cyclestreets routing option, but that just plotted a route that the CS app doesn't - through very locked gates. (Google doesn't know they are locked either - have been for years...)

Google have an approval process before it goes live to the site, where they are supposed to check it. If something slips through, it can be reported or rated.

You can't export google to GPX, but I think Garmin connect uses googlemaps and if route is created, you can then plot via Garmin.

Another reason I like bikehike is that you can insert directions (e.g. turn left) - very useful on an audax.

Yes, but can you export to gps?

I use RideWithGPS as my main gpx creater. You can switch mid track between follow road and dray stright lines, to hop over obstructions like peoples gardens etc...

You can actually create your route on google map maker. I've done this on a few routes.

Most other apps/ sites also use google maps as the source, so once approved, you would be able to plot on them.

cyclingweekly.cc is also reasonable with a couple of bugbears

Major - It can't work out what the correct direction of travel is round roundabouts or on dual carriageways (drive on the left is too hard...), so you have to remove the "follow roads" option.

Minor - when you unclick the follow roads option which allows you to follow paths/fields whatever... and then click back to it will autiomatically force you into Driving mode which will not allow cycle paths...

I use mapmyride which allows you to switch off follow roads and plot your route wherever takes your fancy.

You do need this to plot some fairly standard routes at times though.

Since CycleStreets came along I have hardly used any other route/mapping websites/apps.

I want to create a GPS file for a route that doesn't exist 'on the ground'.

I have used EveryTrail, but the "Draw your trip" option says "Drawing a trip is temporarily disabled".

Seems to have been been "disabled" for several months!
