...take a canoe to work.

I was walking along the canal many years ago and saw a guy I knew canoeing home from work.

He worked at Craiglockart. Not sure where he lived, but he was headed west.

(And, despite his muscles, really wasn't going any faster than I was walking.)

Could be a couple of old frames in the canal, you never know!

Maybe it's just the way I'm looking at it, but at the foot of the illustration the water level looks higher than the path. Jings - another first for Edinburgh . . .

We cycle along the canal most weeks as part of our weekly evening cycle up to the reservoirs. I have cycked along it for a number of years and remember when it ended just short of Wester Hailes. Its much improved since then and with the addition of the new LED lights along the final stretch its great. The access used to be a little limited but recently the new accomodation along its banks have incressed the access. I like cycling along the canal now and plan to head further afield. We've been out to Ratho and found the path pretty roapy and littered with lots of puddles. Its a real shame ss these large multiple puddles put us off cycling the canal exclusively.

"
Consultation on a Edinburgh Canal Strategy: comments invited by 17 Dec

Since its re-birth as part of the Millennium Link Project, the Union Canal has come a long way from a derelict backwater to one of Edinburgh 's most important assets. The Union Canal is now enjoyed on a daily basis by people for a variety of uses such as boating, rowing, walking, cycling and fishing. The Canal is also a focus for new development, particularly at Fountainbridge, for new moorings, marinas and canal-focused community activities. However, as the Canal is developed, its special environment must also be protected with its benefits shared by the wider community. To ensure that this happens The City of Edinburgh Council and British Waterways Scotland are preparing a Strategy for the Union Canal within the Edinburgh area.

An Edinburgh Canal Strategy Consultation Document has now been approved by the City of edinburgh Council Planning Committee for consultation purposes. A supporting planning committee report is also available.

The consultation will run from Monday 11th October - Friday 17th December 2010.

A number of public workshops will be held during the consultation period including:
Monday 22 November - Polwarth Parish Church - 6pm
Wednesday 24 November - Tollcross Community Centre - 6pm
Saturday 20 November - Reunion Canal Boat - Edinburgh Quay from 10am - 12pm, Harrison Park from 12.30 - 2.30pm. Feel free to take the trip down the canal between 12 and 12.30 or at 2.30pm

If you wish to be involved with the consultation contact Kate Hopper for more details.

Some user education still needed, though...

On my way home tonight on the towpath near Kingsknowe Station, I came up behind two pedestrians ambling along and taking up the full width of the path. One juvenile and one a little older. Both with cropped hair, wearing synthetic baggy tracksuits with trainers and looking thin and unhealthy. The older carried an open can of beer. You can probably think of a three letter word to describe them.

Me - "ting ting" (using my bell, not my high precision voice)
Them - no reaction
Me, now quite a bit closer "ting"
Them - no apparent reaction
Me, now actually travelling well below the 6mph speed limit and right behind them - "Can I come by please?"
One of them - "You could if you were on foot, but you're on a bike and this is a footpath, so I'm not going to let you by"
Me - "No, actually this is National Cycle Route 75. That's what the signs mean"
Them - no reaction, so at this point I'm afraid I pushed past them and carried on.

As I say, some user education required before the canal zone can be a total success...

"In Wester Hailes?"

Not quite - across the Pennines.

Not all rural.

"there's no facilities on the canal between Slateford aqueduct and Ratho!"

There is a wide bit at Wester Hailes ('turning hole'?)

When it was first planned to reopen the canal (15+ years ago) there was a lot effort made by WH locals to get a marina (really). But it got cut out of the final plans.

This might be a revival - or just cynical signage...
