mgj is correct; traffic turning left illegally risks hitting pedestrians who have a green man.

Presume that it is a green man for pedestrians when it is a green light for Dalry Road. The route for other traffic goes round via Morrison St; or you can stop being traffic for 10 seconds and get off

Is there any reason that turning left should be forbidden for cyclists? Maybe we could request an 'except cycles' addition to the no left turn signs. Not that it's a particularly nice place to turn in to...

"Dear DavidsonsDave

Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding the above junction and the fact that road users are ignoring the signs.

The original tram design for the junction use the blue “Ahead Only” white arrow on blue circular background sign. Whilst technically giving a correct instruction to drivers, following discussions, we have decided to replace these with the more conventional “No Left Turn” and “No Right Turn” signs. These are better understood by drivers and should help to improve compliance with the left turn ban at this location. We have therefore asked that our traffic signals maintenance contractor order the relevant signs and fit them to the traffic signal heads on Dalry Road, replacing the “Ahead Only” signs.

Hopefully these measures will resolve this problem but please let us know if users continue to ingore the signs.

I trust this information is of use to you but please feel free to contact this office if you require any further information.

Many thanks
Nice lady from the City Centre Leith Neighbourhood Team"

You used to be allowed to make a left turn here on a bike, thanks to a permitting TRO. There was never any signs to say it was allowed, but it was on the plans. The post-trams TRO doesn't allow tfor this.

As everyone else has said, it is no left turn for cars but I have seen cars do it. I make the left turn there (most mornings, as I come down Dalry Road and want to go to the station) by pulling up on the left, walking accross the pavement and getting back on my bike to cycle the short distance to the jug handle from where I wheel the bike into the station.

Boyfriend of Fimm was speculating that there are more people trying to make the illegal left turn at the moment while Russell Road is shut.

Given that they can find the money for lots of signs about cyclists beware tram tracks, I'm sure they can put up some "No left turn" signs and maybe one of those diagrams - is there one on the way to Ardmillan Terrace? - that show you have to go all the way round by Torphicen Street to make the left turn.

...also the signalhead is a green ahead arrow. On Streetview when this is green, the green man for crossing Haymarket Terrace is also on.

Definately not permitted. The signs up on approach and positioned under the green on the signal heads (Diagram 606) "Vehicular traffic must proceed in the direction of the arrow".

this can be used as an alternative to no right/left arrows.

@SRD No, I've only see cars doing it.

There is no specific "No left turn" sign, which might clarify things here.

I get off too. Certainly thought it was forbidden under new design.

by 'vehicles' do you mean bikes?

Sorry that this isn't really cycling-specific but can anyone confirm whether it is legal to make a left turn when coming from Dalry Road onto Haymarket Terrace?

I cycle this route but dismount on Dalry Road at the junction and get back on my bike at Haymarket Terrace as there are three "Ahead Only" signs on the traffic lights.

However, I do see vehicles making the left turn here every second day, and when I chat to them about it, they seem to think that they are allowed to, although as one of these people also ran a red light before making the turn, her interpretation of the highway code may be questionable.
