I love the bit lower down where stupid people think harmless little cars actually create pollution.

Despite this, a YouGov poll cited by SMMT has found that 87% of UK adults are unaware of the latest standard, consequently blaming cars - instead of larger polluters like power stations - as the biggest cause of air pollution.

Must be all the power stations lining city streets that make the air here so crap then.

Diesel car 'demonisation' condemned by industry group

A campaign to combat the "demonisation" of diesel has been launched by the UK's leading motor industry association.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), along with BMW, Ford, and Jaguar Land Rover, believe fears over diesel are misplaced.

The campaign comes in response to several efforts to curb diesel cars due to the harmful pollutants they produce

Despite the improvements in diesel engine NOX emissions (down to legislation by the EU), they still emit ~33% more than a petrol equivalent, and 100% more than the bicycle equivalent. These EURO standards also don't cover particulate emissions from diesels sooty stuff called Diesel Particulate Matter, made up of a very long list of particularly nasty compounds and with particle sizes down to the nano size that there's no real current way to do anything about like filter.

One wonders how much of the SMMT's concern is about the fact the industry has been falling over itself to invest in diesel production and promote it to the buyer as a clean, healthy and green alternative to petrol-power.
