Unless I've been particularly unobservant recently, a new anonymous grey box cycle counter has just appeared by the canal towpath to the east of Hermiston House Road Bridge.

Jdaniel: this isn't the big one with the display. It's a waist height anonymous grey box.

Iwrats: It does explain the data format a wee bit

Counters come in the form of two-sensor or four-sensor depending on width required to cover. Data is then recorded at hourly intervals for each sensor to the file.

It's really not unlikely that the data collection is actually done in CSV. This will be a simple embedded computer with limited storage and processing power. With these limitations it's easy and space efficient to write a line to a file once an hour. I work with a system at work that records each event in CSV and use a vendor supplied tool to filter and search.

What I've not seen is anything stating the direction of each sensor (so yes after all that I agree it's not that useful a data set, but easily fixed)

That is an object lesson in how not to share data. The data set I had a look at seems to end in 2013 and there's no hint at what four of the fields signify. Nor can I tell where on the long named street the counter might be.

Data without context are just numbers, not information. And CSV files are the work of the devil. The data will be in queryable format already somewhere and I resent having to build them back into that form after they've been mangled through CSV. Harumph.

@Klaxon that seems strange. I rarely see it without at least a couple of hundred counts by half eight ish in the mornings, and it is usually well over 1000 going on 2000+ in the evenings mid-week. Perhaps it is not communicating the collected data successfully back to the central hub?

Seemed to only have detectors a few from the kerb (double black lines).

If so, won't be counting me very often as turn right into Blackford Road and coming back turn right at the bottom of the hill so will usually be well over towards the middle if there's nothing coming down WL when I turn left from Blackford Road.

Looks like another counter is going on NMW at the north-east corner of the tennis courts. A huge truck was parked on the bicycle path nearby, along with a couple of smaller vehicles. They was some obvious damage to the grass right next to the work. The Innocent to Meadows route appears to be coming along relatively quickly just around the corner.

The one on the Pinkhill path was removed a year or two ago. Now it is put back. I think it has 2 induction loops, one for the path to Balgreen , the other on the ramp down to Glendevon / on-road route to Roseburn. So maybe it keeps 2 counts...

The counter at Edinburgh Quay doesn't register my passing any more - wonder if the sensors are needing calibrated. As I cycled towards it at the weekend it was at 49 and both me and a lady walking towards me looked in anticipation but nope; nothing.

Crestfallen. It does mean the counter is not feeding an accurate account back to whoever this info goes. Where does it go and what do they do with it?

I noticed the one in Roseburn Park has now been installed.

Also, is there one on the Pinkhill path as well? It's not mentioned on the list, but a small electrical-style box has appeared at the side of the path, similar to the one in the park. I didn't notice any strips on the ground.

If it is a counter then they havent installed it in the correct place to capture the true number of cyclists using the path. It's east of the junction with the path down to the golf course. Given almost all people use this turn-off it won't capture them; just the smaller number heading to/from the tram stop.
