TRO out to reverse the one way and add contraflow cycling on Raeburn St.

It reminded me of the one-way street exemptions project that's supposedly happening. Has anyone heard anything about this recently? Feels like it's fallen to the side when it could be massively useful.

@SRD Rutland Street is part of CCWEL so should be coming soon (construction should start in May). re: ATAP, yep: http://www.spokes.org.uk/2010/09/cec-active-travel-action-plan/. Seems like a crazy amount of time considering most will purely be a couple of signs and some paint.

Mildly depressing reading it ten years later:
By April 2014, implement 13 major missing Family Network links, including early action on Innocent connection to Meadows, Roseburn to Princes St, North Edinburgh path to Botanics (east and west) and (many people will be delighted!) A90 route to Queensferry and Forth Bridge. Other of these links by 2014 include Meadows to North Edinburgh via city centre, Portobello to Leith to North Edinburgh, Union Canal to North Edinburgh paths. Outline designs for all these routes by April 2011.

@Rosie I was thinking of Shandwick Place - Rutland Square. I would cycle the wrong way but there's a tad too many taxis that come flying around the corner. Erm, I mean my friend was thinking of...

At least CCWEL will be bring in a contraflow on Canning Street, Rutland Street, Coates crescent and quite a few others. Should be done by the end of the year if all goes well!

BE THE CHANGE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE!

I do that by cycling along Canning Street towards Shandwick Place including the 20 yards or so of one-way. In my mind's eye I can see the contraflow which any sane road policy would have to link the WAR to Shandwick Place. There's a secure car and cycle park under the buildings on Exchange Crescent, so this is reasonably busy.

I understand that a contraflow is in some plans somewhere.

On the urban rural divide my mate in cambridge observed a distinction that in Scotland the money is more in the city and rural areas are less affluent (broadly) whereas in England the money is all in the villages and the cities are poor. Whereas in Cambridge the money is in th villages and the money is in the city.

Yes, pretty sure that'd need a TRO. So I'd be (pleasantly) surprised if they actually did that, as they're probably including it in the TROs for the rest of the project.

Out of interest, would a one-way exemption require a TRO? I remember hearing somewhere that they might start some of the contraflow cycle lanes included in the CCWEL early.

Passing through Rutland Sqaure pretty often I wouldn't mind not having to dismount every time when I'm coming from Shandwick Place...

"MARYFIELD PLACE"

Definite candidate for an 'except cyclists' sign. Happens anyway, de facto this is the way the street is used. Handy safer route to cut up to London Road from Easter Road, without risking being crushed by left turning vehicles at the top of Easter Road. Can turn straight into a bus lane instead, far preferable.

HOWEVER -

One Edinburgh contra-flow was removed!

"

Main report

2. A Traffic Regulation Order was made in September 2000 to restrict traffic to one way in Forbes Road. The road was narrow and heavily parked and was not considered capable of sustaining two way traffic without causing congestion. The original proposal had been for a more extensive one-way system, including BruntsfieldGardens, butthiswas reducedfollowinglocalconsultations.

3. The Council’s Local Transport Strategy (Chapter 12C1) states:
“There will be a presumption in favour of new traffic management schemes always incorporatingmeasuresfor cyclists, particularly:...exemptionsfrom road closures and new one-way streets.”

4. In accordance with the above policy, cyclists were exempt from the one-way system. ARoadSafetyAuditoftheproposedsystemsuggestedthatatraffic island be provided at the southern end of the one way system to protect cyclists. The system is illustrated in Appendix I .

5. A number of complaints about the operation of the system were received in the Department following its introduction and the matter was raised at the City Development Neighbourhood Group for Marchmont, Sciennes, Merchiston and North Morningside. The Group expressed the view that the contra-flow route was not safe for cyclists, due to it being narrow, with poor sight-lines for drivers on the curve and the fact that drivers did not expect to encounter cyclists coming in the opposite direction. It was reported that the Bruntsfield Primary PTA were advising parents not to allow children to use the route.

"

http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/download/meetings/id/28223/variation_to_one-way_system_-_forbes_road

It could have made safer by removing a couple of parking spaces on the bend. But...

"Would it include admin/legal-wrangling fees, if TROs are required?"
Under the proposed new sign regs, I think contraflow wouldn't need a TRO. see TSRGD 2015 What will it do for cycling? But the new regs are now expected to have to wait until after the election.

West Newington Place.
Queen Charlotte Street.
There is a worrying suggestion that it would have to involve a daft wee island, which is the £50k blown right away.

Hill/Young/Thistle Streets' traffic flows are all low enough to make them worth at least trying them with contraflow cycling. Circus Lane?
