I remember a friend of a friend coming to our door on Warrender Park Terrace with half his ear hanging off. He'd not done up his front QR skewer after fixing a puncture outside EB. He was rolling down the links to the meadows.

Bunny hopped over one of the speed bumps and saw a wheel go flying away from him.

He said that his last thought was "Some idiots lost their front wheel" before he stopped abruptly and his mind was filled with sound of pavement hitting his head. (no helmet and was absolutely fine apart from missing bits of ear)

Gravity tends to hold the wheels in place when you're rolling along with the skewers open. You might get an unpleasant surprise if you attempt a bunny hop, however...

It does sound like a user-error issue, but I suppose there is a duty of care on manufacturers to try and make their products as idiot proof as possible.

The skewer is undone, I think that's the salient point. Kind of a weird recall, because how could you really ride along with your skewer undone anyway? The wheel would be flopping around all over the place, and drop out of the frame at the first provocation.

Still, I guess to cover all bases, you may as well have skewers that can't lock up the wheel, even if the wheel still falls out ;-)

Indeed, Steveo!

I was always told never to point a QR lever forwards incase a stick or something got in there and knocked the lever open, from that diagram it looks like the lever would also be too close to the rotor if you pointed it forwards.

At a previous employer, several of the managers had mysterious meetings for a Project Alderaan. Someone pointed out that Alderaan was the planet destroyed by the Death Star. None of us were then surprised when the outcome of the project was a big restructure that involved a lot of lay-offs.
