@CyclingEdin @Ed_Leisure Sorry for any confusion. I have asked managers to check web descriptions as pool programmes can differ.

@CyclingEdin @Ed_Leisure If there are specific queries I would always recommend speaking to the pool direct for clarification.

I just got sent a rather extensive survey by Edinburgh Leisure, which did have a number of questions about pool use-cases (lanes/open water swimming/with kids or without). The last question relates to whether the responder would be willing to participate in focus groups.

Might be worth trying to get involved if you have Thoughts. The person in charge is apparently Pam Edgar pamedgar@edinburghleisure.co.uk

Unfortunately the link I have seems to be single-use only; presumably so they can link the results to my membership ID. Even after blowing away all cookies it still knows I have completed the survey already.

Our swim expert Debra Taylor reminds us in today's Scotsman why getting little ones in the pool early is crucial

Portobello and Queensferry win the least helpful prize. One with no descriptions and the other with no times.

I understand why people don't enjoy swimming in lanes by why they think it's then OK to get annoyed with families splashing about it beyond comprehension. I guess it's a very similar debate to shared paths.

also unhappy that Dalry has turned one of the two 'family changing rooms' in the upper deck into a shower - the one nearest the hairdryers. I didn't know there was a family changing room on the ground floor and shall try it next time, not keen on trekking upstairs to dry the kids hair after though.

thanks all. my experience has been that the swimmers who don't swim in the lanes, don't like kids splashing about.

it's okay with the 8yo because she can swim into deep water if she wants to, but with 4yo, I don't like being deeper than i can stand. he swims on his own mostly, but if he gets water in his face and grabs at me unexpectedly, I can struggle to keep my own head out of the water. If there are 2-3 other parents with babies and toddlers, the shallower end of the unlaned space gets very crowded indeed, even before you factor in the swimmers trying to do lengths and pushing us into an even smaller space.

There were quite a lot of families splashing around the last time I was in Dalry. I was in the lanes - as said above, two lanes, the rest free.

Steveo, that's exactly the same setup at warrender. Works well, serious swimmers stay in lanes, kids and splashers stay in the main part.

In past hols, Dalry has had some of those designated as 'fun sessions' - with mainly family groups in the non-laned bit. They seem to have abandoned that.

Dalry has a fast lane and a slow lane deployed when it's public swimming with lanes. The other 3/5th of the pool are available for use as you see fit. Though there will occasionally be folk doing laps who are too unfit or slow to use the lanes (me).

If you can be bothered the whec is better for kids and just up the canal.

SRD, warrender will have 2 lap lanes, and the rest of the pool public at the times shown. I am biased as its about 5 mins from the house, but its my fave by a long way.

Yes, but neither of our nearest pools has any 'fun sessions' .

It's not clear to me if 'public swim with lanes' means it is all lanes (seems not as there is also 'lanes only' swimming.)

Wish they'd ask me* _before_ publishing this stuff.

* or anyone really

I see what you mean. Looking at Leith Vic, I assume the "Fun Session" times are probably most appropriate for kids...?

The Commie is easier: just head to the Teaching Pool, open all day...

Confusing websites are among many things that I've complained to ED Leisure about. Last school hols they put out a pdf type list of 'free swimming' times that I also found tricky. This one seems better *much* easier to navigate to your chosen pool.

http://www.edinburghleisure.co.uk/sites/default/files/AprilHols_FreeSwimming_Final_int.pdf

but i'm left rather baffled by some of the descriptions (I just want to go swimming with my kids and not have people doing laps get annoyed with them when they can't get out of the way quickly because they are just learners).

what do you folk think?
