@Morningsider I'd agree with that assessment. Ultimately, lighting doesn't make much difference if there's no one around and there is any dark area where dodgy types can lurk and drag victims into.

cc - I think "lit bollards" is a poor description of what are really low level street lights.

I don't think additional lighting in the meadows is a great idea. The paths are already well lit. The problem is the park is quiet at night and there are huge dark areas, away from the paths, were undesirable types can lurk. I can't really see how you can change this - it's a big public park.

I'd gladly see the Meadows floodlit if it made it safe at night, but somehow I can't see "lit bollards" helping very much. Wouldn't "lit bollards" just help you to see the bollards? Rather than attackers lurking near them? Can anyone explain the idea?

Sharp modish suits as worn by the wee boys who Scottish Labour employ to marshal those who go off message or drink.

Dress code was to be smart. So we had suited vodka and becks drinkers.

No smokers that I could discern which is another change from parties of my youth.

Person X was a young woman. The boys were all wearing suits!! I do not know what is happening to the youth what is wrong with tartan shirts and Levi 501s? Also whisky and Irn Bru washed down with McEwans export has been surpassed by vodka. Malibu however abides.

Yes, that should be on the door of all houses with men in.

During my daughters party the other night my wife said Make no comment on person X's dress. I never really saw the dress properly as was hiding in living room mostly with party n rest of downstairs. But the comment worked well.

I note one of the proposed safety measures was to erect signs at the entrances to the park saying "you are now entering a park".

Perhaps all the commuters in the office could go together for safety?

I agree that lighting is necessary (or maybe not even necessary) but not sufficient for social safety. The best thing is passers by, but also long sight lines, and plenty of speedy (so no barriers) on and off options if you don't like the look of what or who's ahead.

That said, empty, totally dark dark country roads feel totally fine to me (but I know some people get a bit freaked out by them)

Interesting to contrast this with the Barnton path.

For a while my better half commuted out to South Queensferry but wouldn't use the Barnton path after dark for personal safety reasons, instead cycling on the A90. I think I'm right in saying that the lady commuters of her office universally avoided the Barnton path after dark for this reason, which may have contributed to her choice.

As we probably all know, cycling on the A90 is pretty unpleasant. She gave up cycling there after a while and the other lady commuter I would see doing that run has also packed it in. While necessary, I'm not sure if extra lighting would be sufficient to remove worries of personal safety though?
