I know Council finances are tight, but surely they could at least afford enough folding chairs to fill up the space in front of the bandstand? I was there during the jazz festival last year - some great bands, but lots of the audience sitting on the bare concrete.

He said: “By working in partnership with a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO), we hope to be able to work towards the creation of a new facility as part of major renewal of the Gardens.

“The area is common good land and we are well aware of the implications of building in public parks, so while there is still much work to be done, we are making a commitment to supporting and progressing plans.”

Due to strict rules over what can be built in Princes Street Gardens, city leaders will have to take their plans before the courts and government ministers before they can construct a visitor centre.

Council documents show Mr Springford will pump £5 million into the scheme, while generating further donations of up to £20m.

I was in the West Gardens on Saturday, all looks a bit neglected - decaying concrete on the shelter, Ross Bandstand, etc.

The Ross Bandstand really does look shabby. A real shame considering its location and things not helped by the ugly pile of seats dumped there (of the type that look like they could be taken and stacked somewhere out of the rain rather than left exposed to a Scottish winter.

I thought we *were* getting a massive multi storey underground car park at the new St James Centre? If only they could bury the access roads for the cars and leave the stuff on the surface for people and public transport...

"The solution would be to raise the level of the garden to street level, burying the railway line underground along with a new multi storey car park."

Then Ed could be just like Aber!

Great letter in the Scotsman the other day suggesting that Princes Street gardens is terrible because of the train track at the bottom of it and no one likes a train track at the bottom of their garden.

The solution would be to raise the level of the garden to street level, burying the railway line underground along with a new multi storey car park.

But it's not going to happen until the Council learn to accept that the private motor car is an essential part of modern living.

Or something along those lines.
