Looking at the satellite view on Google Maps, it looks like there is still track running all the way to the A720. </p> http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=1465#post-13819 Fri, 01 Oct 2010 14:34:41 +0000 chdot 13819@http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/ <p><a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/edinburgh/2010/oct/01/edinburgh-zero-waste-millerhall">GuardianEdinburgh has highlighted the plans</a> for Edinburgh and Midlothian to deal with much of the non-recycleable 'rubbish' from the Lothians at Millerhill.</p> <p>The two councils have set up a <a href="http://www.zerowastefuture.com/home.aspx">web site about "Zero Waste"</a> with a <a href="http://www.zerowastefuture.com/about-us/project-site.aspx">link to the Millerhill project</a>.</p> <p>The proposed site used to be the down yard of <a href="http://www.railbrit.co.uk/Millerhill_Marshalling_Yard_and_Associated_Lines/frame.htm">Millerhill Marshalling Yard</a> and is now covered with self-set birch trees. The former up yard is still used for freight.</p> <p>"A new access to the North of the site will be provided as the site is largely land-locked."</p> <p>This will presumably join up with Newcraighall Road near B&amp;Q, though the forthcoming(?) new <a href="http://www.transportscotland.gov.uk/projects/borders-railway">Borders Railway</a> (the old <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waverley_Line">Waverley Line</a>) will complicate things slightly.</p> <p>This whole area (predominantly in Midlothian) is due to be developed at sometime (largely under the name Shawfair) with all sorts of proposed walking and cycling links.</p> <p>This "Zero Waste" project would be a good way to get that part of things going by producing an almost flat (potentially car-free) route from Newcraighall through to Millerhill Road.</p> <p>In addition this development will presumably mean the end of the waste depot at Powderhall allowing the railway line there to become a cycle path joining the North Edinburgh Path Network with paths in east Edinburgh that lead to Portobello. </p>
