Should mean closing of Powderhall and long-awaited cycle route between North and East Path Networks on (current) branch line.

Let's hope so!
Would be very convenient for me...

I didn't realise we had a problem with giant waste?

"The new railway shouldn't complicate things as it will run up the east side of the site"

You are probably right. I'm just basing my 'understanding' on the Shawfair Development Manual (2002 revision!) and the (then) proposed site of Shawfair Station...

This will presumably join up with Newcraighall Road near B&Q, though the forthcoming(?) new Borders Railway (the old Waverley Line) will complicate things slightly.

The new railway shouldn't complicate things as it will run up the east side of the site on existing tracks(the site is marked in red on the map here[i]) then head out on a spur to the south along the existing track bed (running under the first "L" in "Millerhill" on the map) down to the by-pass. Looking at the satellite view on Google Maps, it looks like there is still track running all the way to the A720.

GuardianEdinburgh has highlighted the plans for Edinburgh and Midlothian to deal with much of the non-recycleable 'rubbish' from the Lothians at Millerhill.

The two councils have set up a web site about "Zero Waste" with a link to the Millerhill project.

The proposed site used to be the down yard of Millerhill Marshalling Yard and is now covered with self-set birch trees. The former up yard is still used for freight.

"A new access to the North of the site will be provided as the site is largely land-locked."

This will presumably join up with Newcraighall Road near B&Q, though the forthcoming(?) new Borders Railway (the old Waverley Line) will complicate things slightly.

This whole area (predominantly in Midlothian) is due to be developed at sometime (largely under the name Shawfair) with all sorts of proposed walking and cycling links.

This "Zero Waste" project would be a good way to get that part of things going by producing an almost flat (potentially car-free) route from Newcraighall through to Millerhill Road.

In addition this development will presumably mean the end of the waste depot at Powderhall allowing the railway line there to become a cycle path joining the North Edinburgh Path Network with paths in east Edinburgh that lead to Portobello.
