This proposed path was there in the 1996 version too. You've been pushing that one for a long time chdot.

The oldest I can find is this fourth edition from 1996. No sign of the bridge but there's a proposed route alongside the City Bypass from Sheriffhall towards Musselburgh which came to nothing. There's a link from the bypass the A68 in the way of that now. <Edit> And err, a railway.

Wouldn't be a great advert when a CCE ride out could get to gala quicker than the train.

Network Rail doesn't do anything now without an 8 foot security fence alongside the railway. new-build track-side paths don't quite have the appeal they once had.

(imagine if they'd decided that alongside the rails there should be a continuous cycle track all the way to Galashiels!).

It's a nice idea, but would have been challenging given the number of pinch points (esp tunnels/bridges and the tightness of the embankments in places) and Network Rail's obsession with protecting its assets.

That's not to say that some of the bigger engineering elements (like going under the bypass) could have been tweaked relatively easily to accommodate cycle access.

No that's what I meant, place a requirement on those tendering. Any Request For Proposal from the necessary bodies who put the process in place could have (should have) been wanting to facilitate all forms (imagine if they'd decided that alongside the rails there should be a continuous cycle track all the way to Galashiels!).

It would then have been up to the tenderers to include that in their specs.

"how easy it would have been to place a requirement on the tendering building folk to include a pedestrian/cycle tunnel alongside the rail one"

If only it had been that simple.

Not up to contractors - it would have been for Transport Scotland to think about 'transport' - in all its forms - and WANTING to facilitate 'other'/multi modes!

They want to have a little symbol at the end of the Straiton Pond path to let you know it's near impossible to get a trailer or non-standard bike in or out. I had to uncouple my trailer and lift it over the chicanes.

When I first moved to the area, 15 years ago, and was living in Midlothian, I bought the Spokes maps. At that time they had a route marked over Sheriffhall Roundabout, with a little message that there was a pedestrian and cycle footbridge planned (I'm sure it also had a date on it, long passed, but can't remember what that was).

It came to mind again at the weekend as, driving, I noticed the A6106 (I think that's the number) has re-opened, and noted again how easy it would have been to place a requirement on the tendering building folk to include a pedestrian/cycle tunnel alongside the rail one.
