See http://www.fbhvc.co.uk/heritage-culture-and-museums/drive-it-day/

Some of us have 'daily drivers' but most classic cars are limited by their insurance to 3,000 miles a year. That rationing makes you consider the times you use the car. Maybe it should apply to everyone?

There will be masses on the road this weekend; it is Drive It Day on Sunday. Lots of lovely A roads will be full of folk enjoying a nice drive and lunch in the countryside

I thought every day was Drive It Day?

I think I read on Twitter that someone yelled "Pay Road Tax" (or something like that) at the people taking part in the vigil for the lady who was killed by the lorry in London. (Had a quick look but couldn't see it again.)

Humm is the You don't pay tax still being used? I just wish I could get a rebate for not owning a car, instead of subsidising those who do...

On my danger-fraught escape from Lincolnshire late on Saturday evening I carefully passed about ten VED-exempt vehicles (hi-vizzed to the max, but whose lights were almost lost amongst the reflection from the cats' eyes) travelling along the A57 eastbound. Had they been intending to proceed beyond Dunham they'd have also saved themselves 40p a go to cross the bridge compared to a motor car.

All good, except that local roads are the responsibility of local authorities, and they don't charge VED or road tax when it existed.

Quite happy not to be able to cycle on motorways, and I rarely if ever cycle on A roads these days.

One guy in the work came out with the line that bikes shouldn't be on the road because of no road tax but then made the foolish mistake of admitting he only pays £30 a year for his. He then had to put up with me saying that I felt that as I pay more than 5 times 'tax' for my car of how dare his crappy little car be allowed on the road when I am driving.

He got my point :)

I think my partner's car has £30 duty per year, which isn't even enough money to refuel the work van which comes out to fix the potholes directly outside our house - never mind the tools, labour and materials involved. How people can believe that "road tax" pays for the roads is totally beyond me.

I don't pay VED on my 42 year old Citroen. To be fair, 40 years at the equivalent of £160 probably reflects the damage it will do to the nations highways over its lifetime.

CO2 emissions are another matter, covered by the tax on fuel.

Here're a few brand new cars which don't pay road tax... BMWs, mercs, skodas etc. Perhaps some more useful ammunition :

... well nor does my mate who drives a 1974 Land Rover.

No one has actually ever used the VED argument to my face yet, but I now have some useful ammunition if they do.

It is zero VED because it is a historic vehicle, apparently, LOL.
