Thanks Arellcat. I am on fairly chunky tyres anyway (40mm) so not too much of an issue. I had done the green route down the bottom before - that was pretty boggy.

Gave the red path a go on the way home tonight and it wasn't too busy - 2 dog walkers, a couple of runners, 1 horse rider and about 20 grey squirrels!
Good fun though; agreed about the stony gravel bit past the campsite, I was all over the place trying to avoid the largest stones and the potholes.

I like getting about and seeing new places that you wouldn't expect in the city, and it fit the bill almost perfectly.

Cheers for your advice.

newtoit, this is the route as surveyed by me this evening:

https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=z8hc6KBbnBMA.kVzDB3Af6lgA

In the dry, I'd suggest the red path is fine for a tyre 32mm or bigger. The section past the top of the campsite is actually the roughest bit. Stanedykehead is compacted gravel but has many huge potholes.

Sounds good, I will give it a go if I can be bothered with the hill to get there...

Thank you!

The path is indeed cyclable, though the higher stretch around the east of Buckstone becomes a mudfest every time there is prolonged rain. There's a gate at the Mortonhall end that is normally closed which might necessitate carrying your bike over inna olde skool way.

The path is also popular with joggers and dog walkers, so the same etiquette as the canal towpath applies.

The section at Stanedykehead was broken rock and gravel last time I visited, so wear your biggest tyres.

Just looking for a nice route home before the good weather finishes - wondering if on this route, the path that Cyclestreets won't send me on is Navigable?

http://www.cyclestreets.net/journey/44134274/

There is a direct route through the trees between my start and end point but Cyclestreets doesn't give me that possibility - has anyone done it?! And then any idea if it is possible to get through from there to Alnwickhill past Mortonhall campsite?
