First paragraph is a bit bizarre -

"

A bit of a surprise was in store for organisers of Pedal on Parliament, the annual lobby to improve cycling in Scotland, when they expanded from Edinburgh to three other Scottish cities at the weekend.

I've been busy with work since October but managed to get a free weekend as my two rascals were at District Cub camp.

Late entry as a marchial but it was fun and I managed to start with the first riders and come in last following the smallest rider on his balance bike.

Sunday saw me meeting HankChief at Cramond Brig early for a slog into head winds to Glasgow. We managed a gentle pace and a cafe stop in Bathgate, before the more remote NCN75 to Airdrie. The roads into Glasgow are not for the faint hearted but as time was moving on, we put our heads down for a spin onto Glasgow Green with 20 mins to spare. They had given out all the marchial tabbards so we just joined in with the cyclists to Goerge Sq.

Post speeches it was back the same way we had come in but with a healthy taillie!! Our number had dropped from 7 (+1 Glasweagen on the oustkirts) to 3, HankChief, Frenchy? and me. The ride back took half the time with the growing westerly and we were soon at my branch off point ust west of Newbridge.

163km in total, a nice round 100 miles for the day.

Yes, that's my photo of my bike. Thing I learned on Saturday; it is possible to take a photo and tweet it directly without having to save it first. Very useful.

I think there should be more banners/placards about what we want. I know they aren't the easiest things to carry by bike, but it can be done. There are some others in the video.

On getting builders involved in cycling, I was chatting to the Hilton hotel construction workers who were helping us get up to the lift bridge by stopping traffic as arranged by mr hankchief. Suddenly a third builder appeared all radge, has this been arranged? Rants rant. Anyway, then he starts on what is this for and I say to make streets safer for children to cycle on and he says Too Right, I used to be a member of Spokes.

"I do really wonder how to connect with people who live in dormitory towns"

That is one of the purposes of the SG/Sustrans Community Links (+) Plus 'competitions' where councils fight for a tiny sum of money.

Additionally of course, new places are being built.

E.g. Shawfair which has had millions for a new station (no township yet) and COULD have had a cycle path under the City Bypass.

Instead TS is pennypinching on the Sheriffhall roundabout 'upgrade'.

Someone should talk to Humza...

I do really wonder how to connect with people who live in dormitory towns. These places have had the car designed into every journey for the past 50 years and are still being built like that. Lots of schemes are now being built without even footpaths, a particularly American plague.

What I experienced yesterday in Airdrie and Coatbridge was miles worse than anything in Edinburgh. Urban motorway fiesta. I wouldn't live there and cycle.

@weezee "Many thanks to Kim for letting me throw a reluctant walker into his Urban Arrow for the ride."
Aha, that's where Kim got his passenger from. I wondered!

Two or three of the building-building people who worked on the Abbeyhill student cupboards cycled to work. Maybe people who dig large holes in cobbobbley streets where lorries and taxis spend all day manoeuvring round each other (and the large hole) initially see a bit more peril.

I think there was a photo on the inside front page of the Scotland on Sunday (according to a tweet from my mum).

We were interviewed by STV but I think the Science March knocked us off. It's true that it's not new and so we struggle for media attention.

IWRATS is probably right about the hole guys & I don't know either. Alternatively, Scotland just needs to do a Seville and build the infrastructure ahead of public opinion and let it turn hole-digging guys (and their families) into cyclists because that's the easy way to get about. That said, notable numbers of workies in Dumfries cycle because they've worked out it saves them a packet and it means the wife can have the car as our public transport is rubbish

I get the impression that the EEN coverage of cycling isn't as favourable since Alastair Grant left. He seemed to get it after a while, certainly after all the Roseburn nonsense and going on the protest ride. His opinion piece on Option A/B was positive.

Perhaps someone should invite the new transport correspondent Florence Snead out for a cycle round the city? I would volunteer but I'm not sure a woman in her early 20s would appreciate such an unsolicited offer from a 40 year old man.
