Great, always nice to hear the local shops are getting support.

I suppose not supplying Whyte is probably a decision taken by the insurance companies preferred supplier rather than the company themselves. By the time the source the bike and pay commission to the insurers they might even be making a loss on it.

@acsimpson

Thank you so much for telling me about the small print! I've just gotten off the phone with the insurers, and they;ve agreed to waive the discount.

Absolutely thrilled. And the LBS will be, too!

So unfortunately they've completely refused to supply a Whyte bike, saying they wouldn't make any money on it. I was rather unimpressed with this rationale, but have ended up going for a Giant Invite 1, instead. I will be replacing the garish pink handlebar tape with something more low-key, of course... None of the alternatives (Tifosi, Specialised, etc) had both disc brakes and rear rack mounts. That, or they weren't in stock.

Have sent an email to the insurers asking about the 25% cut they take from cash settlements, just in case they're amenable to paying it directly to the LBS as acsimpson suggested.

Thanks for all the advice!

What does the small print of your insurance say regarding it? I think the only settling 75% of the bikes value is to discourage fraudulent claims from people who decide they want rid of their bike but don't like the second hand value.

When I last had a bike stolen the insurers agreed that I could source the bike myself but insisted that they would send the cheque directly to my suppliers. They might also have settled for receipts showing a purchase of the replacement.

I've had three Tifosis. I like the old CK4s - triple butted Altec2+, same tubing as Colnago, Pinarello and Merckx were using back then. That seems to have been RJ Chicken's one bid for the top-end. The CK3a is sturdy but handles weirdly. The CK7 I've heard is a bit uninspiring as an Audax bike.
I'd hold out for a replacement Whyte.

Worth pushing the insurers. When we had two bikes stolen one was a cross bike I'd built up from the frame, the other was an off-the-peg Trek hybrid owned by my wife.

Like-for-like replacement definitely not available for my cross bike, in the end I could give them a break down of the components, they priced up those from their component manufacturers and gave me a cheque for that total plus the cost of the frame.

For my wife's bike they offered a like-for-like that was a different brand. When I pointed out the exact same model, just a year newer, was listed on their site, and that it wasn't my fault the same model had increased slightly in price, they eventually provided the same model.

EDIT: Plus, what Eddie says.

Can you imagine if a car insurer said, "Sorry, you can't have a replacement BMW Mini. Not on the list. But you can have a nice Fiat Panda instead"?

Outrageous what they think they can get away with when it comes to bikes...

Who do they think they are that they can specify what kind of bike you get?

Hadn't really heard of them. Road.cc says "Tifosi sounds like an Italian marque but it’s actually the house brand of UK distributor Chicken Cycles" - make of that what you will!
Various models seem to get pretty good reviews, good specs etc, so might be worth a closer look?

I've just been on the phone with my insurer. They're being very nice about the whole thing and not putting up too much fuss, but apparently their like-for-like replacement doesn't include Whyte branded bikes.

They're offering me a Tifosi instead- does anyone here have experience with the brand? Is it any good? The guy from Wheelies says I'd get a carbon fork in the bargain, but I'm not that fussed about it to be honest...

I'd take the cash and get a new Whyte instead, but apparently the insurer takes 25% if you do that.

Unfortunately my bike (2015 Whyte Somerset women's bike in granite/lime/acqua size 49) has been stolen, sometime since yesterday afternoon. It has disc brakes and a rear rack, and the saddle was the stock Whyte one it came with.

It's been reported to the police, and I'm checking gumtree/ebay, but if you see anyone trying to sell a bike like that please let me know. I only just got it last month!

Edited to add: it has drop handlebars with black tape,.
