Worldwide travel insurance from CityBond Suretravel via CTC. My home contents don't care what lock I use either inside or outside the house (I asked). Fair enough the travel insurers do specify a lock, but then they go on to specify "electronic tagging" for bikes worth over £1000 (and for bikes + bits that total over £1000 which seems ridiculous since components are not necessarily going to stay attached to a stolen bike). Personally I suspect that it's really in there because lots of people won't and then they have a cast-iron excuse to refuse to pay... But I still need one. Bah.

What insurer is this? They certainly seem strict... mine don't even specify what kind of lock is needed for keeping my bike at home, so long as it is out of sight and forcible entry would be required to access it!

I have one of these seatpost tracker - vastly cheaper versions available from ebay (china) where the only difference is the tracking software.

Mine fits in the stem and needs to be recharged once a month, its quite alot of fun to check where your bike is whenever you feel like it on PC, smartphone etc and, should it ever go walkies, i can go and get it back straight away.

i am really skeptical of the data tags as they all rely on a) the bike being checked by someone with a scanner in the right location and b) any results from that scan being checked against comprehensive up to date database.

I don't even think UK police check UK databases. That's certainly what the Check That Bike! FOI request indicated.

My travel insurance won't cover my lovely new bike against nicking unless it has an electronic tag. Does anyone know if these things will fit into any seat post? Or should I get one of the wee glue-in bobbins? http://www.halfords.com/cycling/tools-maintenance/bike-storage-solutions/immobitag-electronic-cycle-protection#tab3

(I'm a bit miffed with them as it seems to me the chances of the police in another country checking a UK database if they DID recover a stolen bike are quite low!)
