The only thing I would say about Haymarket yards is that although the layout is worse than outside the station, the lack of traffic makes it much easier to choose your line across the tracks. The real killer outside the station is the constraint on getting a good angle across the obstacle by the presence of a car right behind you. I feel much more at ease on the yards because of this.

And that's the "improved" design for that bit of the "path"!

I originally took the first photo as an example of a poor pedestrian crossing, then noticed the cycle route. Seems even more lethal than the junction outside the station.

I hit HY westbound about 7pm on Friday, to be met with a cyclist down between the two tram lines. He was being well attended to by a pedestrian and a couple of other cyclists. Seemed to be in too much pain to be moved from the road.

Hope he's recovering well.

Its a horrible bit there. I'm far more cautious/worried about coming down there than on Haymarket Terrace, despite the relative absence of traffic.

Had to detour a wee while later on Friday evening as the Police were closing Market Street because of some poor sod threatening to jump of the North Bridge. Hope they are OK too
