Thanks all. I guess it isn't my lucky day but I'll mark the thread as resolved as I have a few possibilities to follow up (foreign bike shops).

After trying a few different platforms/browsers I managed to get a spare right-side 130/74 Sora triple crank out of bicikli.de, which claimed to offer Shimano's entire back catalogue but didn't make it obvious what needed to be pressed to choose size/colour/configuration and which bits meant something was out of stock. It unfortunately clearly says "Not available now!" for the SM-PD40/Y40Z98010.

Oh, you are a legend sir. Google must hate me as that result still doesn't show up as a result for me while this thread does.

Unfortunately, on attempting to add said item to my basket i get:

"The requested quantity for "Shimano Spares SM-PD40 reflector unit, pair" is not available."

Drat and double drat...

Thankyou anyway.

@DaveC All power to those who like the flexibility offered by the SM-PD22 but I just don't want the faff of potentially having to flip the pedal round to clip in when moving. This proved to be hard to do on a fixie when (for example) one side of the pedal gets grunged up with snow. Would be OK on a freewheel bike, so I may yet pick up a pair of SM-PD22s for use on the tourer.

Also, tried the bicycle works - the SM-PD40 is not listed in Madison's catalogue as a spare. :(

Thanks for the link DaveC. Those are on the shopping list. No need to swap pedals around for cleated and non-cleated. I would be removing them for cleated use though.

"as I'd lose one "side" of the pedal to the reflector assembly"

err correct me if I'm wrong but you can only use one side at a time! Also the reflector insert also 'centers' the pedal as the weight pulls the reflector down leaving the other side to be clipped into very easily.

The SM-PD22 unfortunately won't do quite what I want (if it even fits on the M545) as I'd lose one "side" of the pedal to the reflector assembly

The SM-PD40 has the advantage that both cleat attachment points remain available.

I will call the Bicycle Works this lunchtime and see if they can order them.

I bought the basic PD-m520* pedals from Rose Cycles and they came with these SM-PD-22 reflector adapters for free! (***Although they may have been free with the m540 instead?)

Anyway you can buy them from Rose here for ~£9 excluding postage:

http://www.rosebikes.co.uk/article/shimano-sm-pd-22-adapter-with-reflector/aid:115758

I remember thinking that they seemed expensive on their own but free with the cheap Shimano pedals, was a great deal. You can phone Rose (on a UK number) and ask about the pedals and which type come with the free reflectors.

IMPORTANT!!!!!

One downside I found! They work great with Shimano pedals as both sides of the pedal are sprung independantly. But later I had my bike services and the shop put more expensive BBB pedals (they said they were better quality) but to my downfall (literally) I found that the pedals have ONE sprung plate which operates for both sides of the pedal. This means if you clip these plastic reflectors in the bottom, you find it extremely difficult to unclip your shoes out of the top as the single plate will not compress the plastic of the reflector!!

Specific to M545 (which are a downhill MTB pedal with a cage, unlike most clipless). The reflectors are in a sort of plastic wraparound thing that surrounds the pedal's metal cage rather than attaching to one of the cleat points like the generic reflector assembly. Like this:

http://fotoalbum.mtb-forum.it/albums/73648/thumbs_576/961932.jpg

Bare pedal:

Is it the generic reflector assembly that comes with all Shimano clipless pedals? Or is this specific to the M545?

If it's the former, I think I have some that have never been used, they would have come from A530 single-sided pedals.

I had these reflectors on my pedals until last Friday but an encounter with a monster pothole at an inopportune time tore lumps out of both (plus broke a mudguard stay and seemingly caused 2 teeth to snap off the rear sprocket - amazingly I stayed on throughout). The M545 is an obsolete pedal, so does anyone have this part in their bits box they are willing to part with for beer tokens?

Shimano part number is "sm-pd40". From Google there appears to be a German site offering them for sale but am having no luck getting an order accepted.
