Had my first chance to cycle this on Saturday. Was impressed. Quiet, being a weekend, so not an entirely fair test but in essence it's fair to say that I didn't feel at any risk (where previously I'd have had my 'stay alive' radar on full even at a weekend). Have seen this approach also working here near Alloa: http://osm.org/go/evdycRZq?layers=C&m= I'm sure it's not perfect - but credit where credit is due.

Persuaded madame IWRATS to cycle to the Royal Highland Show for goat bothering/venison burger/people watching.

Gogar Station Road is now lovely. It was odd to cycle on it without my bell ringing itself silly through the trenches in the tarmac.

However....on the way there there was a slight incident at the house between the bridge and Daltons. Just a clumsy exit from the concealed driveway - no biggie.

On the way home, just short of the railway bridge a guy overtook me just as a 4x4 came the other way. He sped up and got his car tucked in with a few meters clearance. Thing is, I think he'd forgotten about the huge caravan he was towing, which I had to mount the verge to avoid.

So exactly the situation that the road markings are designed to avoid happened the first time I used the new facility. Disheartening, innit?

@Greenroofer

Oddly, with the shades, the yellow jacket and the 'on bike posture' I was quite convinced that was @shuggiet. Red panniers and absence of squeaky dinosaur horn should have been diagnostic. Apologies.

Bizarrely, despite spotting Arrelcat reasonably often I've never, ever seen the red torpedo in real life.

Laidback - good spot on the crank shorteners.

He was the first adult that I've had on the back - was easier to balance than I thought.

Only things that was unusual was having a 'sensible' conversation at headheight (rather than toddler chatting lower down) and the stoker putting their foot down when coming to a stop.

Helios tandem with Andrew Burns on back. I note the crank shorteners for Hankchief family use!

Smooth transition as safer cycle route opens

Gogar Station Road has reopened after being resurfaced and made more cycle friendly.

The rat-run route – already a narrow and twisty road – had become more hazardous for cyclists due to bumps and potholes. As a key link between the canal towpath and the A8 cycle path, it was a priority to be tackled.

The new design has seen the removal of the road centre-line with advisory cycle lanes at the side. It is hoped this will improve conditions for cyclists. A reduced speed limit may also be imposed for other road users.

http://m.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/transport/hundreds-set-for-two-capitals-cycle-ride-1-3792369

@fimm - I use my camera (a Contour with a built in GPS) to take a pic every 3 seconds. Because it has the built in GPS they already have location.

They also have a phone app (less good for bikes)

I've also noticed that they now accept Video Files and GPS traces, so I might try that on my way home.

Well, here's the video you've been waiting for. The most interesting cycling video ever. I've even published it in full HD.

The road is lovely now: simply having a smooth surface makes it much pleasanter.

The idiotic overtake at the end shows that it's not all sweetness and light, though.

Well done @hankchief and @greenroofer and others.. Cycled along it this morning in a convoy of 4 bikes, with only 2 cars ( 1 in each direction) through the length of GSR. The car that needed to overtake, moved right over to the other cycle lane, and did it at a slow speed. so 100% success for bike/ car interaction so far!

Won't be able to join you tomorrow, so good luck!

They have been busy painting over the weekend and the road is now open.

Lighter traffic than normal today but that will only ramp up once drivers realise its open.

Very nice to cycle on.

Hope to see some of you tomorrow for our opening celebration - 8am at the chicken farm.

@Snowy: spot on analysis.

The only thing I would add is the appetite to make such a change. I'm not sure that would be a battle we could win. Locals, though traffic & the potential development of David Murray's Garden District would all have been against us.

@Tulyar: Summary - it's significant improvement to a stretch of road that's been hostile to cycle on for years = A lot of love for it.

It's been 10 years since a Global HQ was built nearby, which increased traffic in its own right and built a bridge over the A8 which allowed Westbound A8 traffic to access GSR and added to the traffic.

Since then it's not been a pleasant road to cycle on. It was the source of regular grumbles amongst the cyclists that used it with tales of close passes and driver aggression. There was some engagement with the council but not enough to turn the dial - the problem being that you would only get short snippets of conversation as people came & went in the changing room.

3 years ago someone (who's on here) set up a Bicycle User Group at work, which similar to CCE allowed for the joining up of ideas and grumbles so that pressure can be exerted to fix them.

After some good success with onsite issues, the problem of GSR was agreed to be tackled and there started a concerted campaign to persuade CEC to act. A lot of emails have been written by a lot people.

Those who have used it are genuinely pleased that we don't have to dodge the potholes anymore, which in winter was particularly scary. Hopefully the close passes & speeds should reduce too.

It is a relief that with the exception of a nasty road rage incident last year, we have managed to get through the last few years without a serious incident caused by the state of the road.

The celebration is a chance to recognise the improvement is welcomed by those that use it. Yes, it could be better but at least we aren't still waiting for it.

A bit of PR for this sort of thing won't go a miss both to persuade CEC (& other LAs) to do more like it but also reinforce the message that close passes are dangerous and unacceptable.
