I don't know what you ride but I've yet to see a Surly I would object to.

It is a Cross Check. It is brilliant to ride but I was certainly attracted by its looks too!

The only criticism I could level aesthetically at Surlies is the use of the Ahead-stem on a classic looking, straight top tubed frame. It just looks a bit out of place when stared at from the side, especially given a slight rise on the stem.

But if that's all I can come up with, you know there's very little wrong with them!

Does anyone know the exact nature of the problem with Surly that the mechanic from The Bike Chain had, which apparently caused him to publicly gripe about having to build one up for a customer on FB or Twitter (which was mentioned in the FB discussions when the premises were transferred to EBC)?

Kingston Bicycles seem to have a selection of SS and hub gear bikes so why did they go with the derailleur bikes for their collaboration?

"I would just hope that the bike is decent enough to be fun"

At least it's not 'full suspension' adding more weight than fun(ction).

I 'might' have made a comment about black bikes being boring before being a total hypocrite and getting a black bike when I realised that actually they are rather cool... Obviously...

"I would just hope that the bike is decent enough to be fun and not to put its owners off cycling."

THAT is the most important aspect.

"and for some that extra £400 to have the branding and the pink paint will be worth it"

Better a bike than a 'designer' handbag...

"

Cath Kidston is now a global British brand in over 180 stores in 14 different countries and is widely seen as “The Home of Modern Vintage”.

Kingston Bicycles was established in 2009 to promote classic styled practical bikes as more cities embraced cycling. With cycling moving more towards lifestyle friendly bikes speed is less important, so traditional comfort bikes are quickly becoming the urban cyclists model of choice for commuting, shopping or leisure.

Oh and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Surly if I needed to. I could spend hours on the internet searching for uncool bikes that are acceptable to men who pull up next to you at the traffic lights but I can't really be bothered.

I would just hope that the bike is decent enough to be fun and not to put its owners off cycling.

Might as well post what I posted on FB about the bike:

Exactly, and for some that extra £400 to have the branding and the pink paint will be worth it. Their money. I buy Rapha when I could easily buy something cheaper that effectively does the same thing - that's no different to buying this bike. If personal taste, colour preferences, and brand names meant nothing at all in cycling we'd all be riding identikit black bikes with no name on them - whether we like it or not we all make choices of bike based on how it looks, sometimes swayed by the brand name (whether that's Specialized or Trek or Raleigh or, in my case, Cotic). Again, someone choosing to ride a Cath Kidston bike is no different to that. And hey, it's someone on a bike, what's not to like?

You can buy the same 7-speed Kingston "Hampton" shopper bike for about £180 online / Argos. That makes for a very expensive coat of pink paint.

For £400 you probably can buy yourself a hub-geared town bike with a bit more range than the 3 speed.

Bit garish for me! I eventually managed to find a price, £399 for anyone who is wondering. Can't tell whether that is a good price or not. It is a 7 speed though which makes it more useful as a town bike than 3 speed IMO. And it does come with a rack, mudguards, chainguard, all that <strike>useful</strike> essential stuff.
