But probably not.
What has UKGov got against Erasmus? Devolved powers are for free movement for younger people. Would be a good start to improving relations.
Meanwhile EU red tape is at an embarrassing level. Had one shipment returned as square metres of a floor mat were missing! More complex package from Taiwan comes straight in no problem.

Here's some typical stuff for us to fill in. Bit more complex than a PartyGate questionnaire.

Make a mistake on a commodity code and goods will be held.

A clear invoice containing all of the below information ( for reference we cannot ship anything without an invoice )
++

EX works / FCA Invoice requirements to ship

A Registered UK Entity sending the invoice for shipment headed by the Full UK company’s address
Clear in full UK shippers address + Vat + GB EORI ( normally the shippers vat with 3-4 0’s after it )
Full Receivers address + Vat + Eori
Clear payment terms and Incoterms listed either EX WORKS / DAP/ FCA - We do not arrange any DDP shipments
Clear exact amount of product e.g 1500 cans ETC
Clear product descriptions of the consignment E.g 1 pallet ( goods included ) at 120x100x80 50KG net 95KG Gross
Clear HS/Commodity codes listed ( ensuring that they are using the 2022 codes if they have changed – these can be found on the HMRC websites we are not permitted to tell you what codes to use )
If the shipment is return goods then a CPC code made be applicable the Shipper should be aware if this is applicable and can also find these on HMRC websites – again we are not permitted to inform you what codes are correct or what codes to use
Currency’s listed on the invoice with a clear price of the products per item ETC
The Origin of the goods - if the goods are of UK origin then an accompanying statement of UK preferential origin must also be included on the invoice

If the shipment is DAP then the following must also be included
The Full Town in Germany must be included on the invoice next to the Incoterms

Must be worded correctly or will be refused on the statement of uk preferential origin
(Period: from 01/01/2020 to 25/12/2023
The exporter of the products covered by this document ( UK EORI ) declares that,
except where otherwise clearly indicated, these products are of (country) preferential origin.

If he really cares about costs being dumped on working families by elite policymakers, perhaps I could draw his attention to Brexit. Its price tag, according to one calculation, will by 2050 be 20 times greater than the cost of net zero. Yes, that Brexit, which Baker, as the former chairman of the European Research Group, was so determined to take all the way.

“

The former chancellor George Osborne’s family wallpaper business has said that Brexit added £400,000 to its costs, as the company’s sales slid more than 16% during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Osborne & Little, which is controlled by Osborne’s father, Sir Peter Osborne, said the UK’s exit from the EU had “an immediate adverse effect on profits” from January 2021, with unforeseen costs such as increased shipping payments and taxes on EU goods imported to the UK before being exported back to Europe.

To think we 'negotiated' this trade obstacle. A sample of some recent coms for businesses warning us of hard times ahead for anyone insisting on doing business with their EU neighbours.

Commercial goods that you bring into the country yourself to sell or use for your business count as Merchandise in Baggage. This means that when you’re travelling in and out of the country on business, equipment, samples or products that you carry with you are classed as goods, and customs rules apply.
You need to complete a simplified online declaration when entering or leaving Great Britain if you are carrying any goods to sell or use by a business with a value not exceeding £1,500, not weighing more than 1,000kgs and not classed as excise or restricted goods. Restricted goods can include goods such as products of animal origin, plants and certain types of fruit and vegetables. Further detail on which goods are classed as restricted can be found on GOV‌‌.UK by searching 'restricted and controlled goods'.
You can complete the declaration at gov‌‌.uk/hmrc‌‌/goods-‌‌in-baggage within five days of arriving in or leaving Great Britain, or you can make an oral declaration to a Border Force officer by going to the 'goods to declare' channel (red channel) or red phone point when going through customs, if such facilities exist.
If you are carrying goods exceeding £1,500 in value, weighing more than 1,000kgs or which are excise or restricted goods, you or your customs agent must submit a full customs declaration electronically using either the Customs Handling of Import and Export Freight system (CHIEF) or the Customs Declaration Service (CDS).
For moving commercial goods in your accompanied baggage from Great Britain to Northern Ireland, you need to make a declaration through the Trader Support Service, which is provided by HMRC free to use, regardless of the value or nature of goods.
For movements between Northern Ireland and the EU, there are no changes to the rules and goods can continue to move without a customs declaration.

UKGov statement about NI's EUUK status at end cheered me up! That's the kind of deal we wanted here.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/oct/12/eu-ready-to-scrap-most-post-brexit-checks-on-british-goods-entering-ni

The EU will offer to remove a majority of post-Brexit checks on British goods entering Northern Ireland as it seeks to turn the page on the rancorous relationship with Boris Johnson.

Up to 50% of customs checks on goods would be lifted and more than half the checks on meat and plants entering Northern Ireland would be abandoned under the bold offer from Brussels.

The olive branch will be extended on Wednesday in defiance of the French government, which internally raised concerns about the proposed move by Maroš Šefčovič, the EU’s Brexit commissioner.

It comes after David Frost, the UK’s Brexit minister, warned it would be a “historic misjudgment” if the EU did not consider scrapping and replacing the existing Northern Ireland protocol.

Another perspective:

https://davidallengreen.com/2021/10/the-brexit-policy-of-admiral-boom/

...we have the preposterous negotiation of Frost against Frost.

The Frost of 2020 who not only trumpeted the Brexit deal in general but that it ended the role of European Court of Justice in particular against the Frost of 2021 who now says the role of that court is fundamentally important.

Both were/are wrong.

The Frost of 2020 did not want to admit the small continuing role of the European Court of Justice.

The Frost of 2021 does not want to admit that the small continuing role of the European Court of Justice is of almost no practical importance.

The European Court of Justice is a sham issue – it is a contrived, bad faith attempt to find something – anything – to open up the protocol.

As an exercise in misdirection, it is up there with the Chewbacca defense./

The current politics of the United Kingdom have a surreal quality – where things are better illustrated by references to Mary Poppins and South Park than by citing precedents from political history.

We have a Brexit agreement negotiated and celebrated as ‘excellent’ by the same minister who now says it is so flawed that it needs to be re-negotiated.

Like the (literally) ship-shape house introduced at the beginning of Mary Poppins, what should seem very odd has very soon become very normal.

Yet, as the attorney in South Park avers in another context, ‘it does not make sense.’

And the key to understanding so much of current law and policy of United Kingdom is that it does not make sense, but it is happening anyway.

UkGov is trying to provoke a reaction from EU.
Our contacts in EU aren't impressed with their lying and exceptionalism.
Upshot is we pay more and favours are harder to get. We need some 'adults in the room!'.

The days of naval battles in the North Sea or Irish Sea are thankfully over. Why the British Empire expects anyone to pay a blind bit of notice to its petulant demands is anyone's guess.

You would hope that this was the first stage in BoBo & Co executing a climbdown and taking us back into the single market proper, or at least an EFTA-equivalent level deal, while trying to save face. Sadly the reality is probably that they actually do believe they can just strut about like angry peacocks and Johnny Foreigner will realise that they can't keep good ol' Blighty down wot wot and do what they're told like the good old days.

“

There are a few problems with Boris Johnson's big idea, namely that the sharp fall in the supply of unskilled and semi skilled workers in the UK - triggered by Brexit, reinforced by Covid - will automatically lead businesses to invest, such that the UK's long history of low productivity and low incomes will end on his watch.
