"basically an admission that cars and buses are more important than people?"

I reported flooding on the Blackhall Path through Clarence a couple of years ago when I moved to my current home. I reported it again through fixmystreet on 13 January 2014 and again in Feburary this year. Recently, the local community council-type organisation told me "2 areas of flooding have been investigated and designs are complete. The estimated timescale is 2015/2016 i.e within this financial year. However, as the council are on a cost cutting exercise and have to save 67 million pounds over the next few years it may be that not all actions will be undertaken in the near future."

If this was happening on a road that cars and buses use, then it would have been fixed a long time ago.

https://www.fixmystreet.com/report/421866

"Can his attention be drawn to the unacceptably-lumpy-surface-on-the-new-segregated-bits thread?"

Anyone can do that...

I was just waiting until it was all finished - the B St. surface has already been re-done because of 'wrong sort of chips'.

But perhaps I'm being optimistic that someone is 'checking for quality'.

The North Bridge one is a bit of an annoying response though.

"As this location has a significant traffic volume, including numerous bus services it is difficult to provide a solution without causing major disruption to the city centre"

So basically where there is a lot of traffic pedestrians can just sod off. It's also a place with pretty significant pedestrian volume - basically an admission that cars and buses are more important than people?

I have received an impressively comprehensive response to this thread (via Andrew Burns).

"

have collated the information provided by the New Works Team, City Centre and South Neighbourhoods below.

Buccleuch Terrace and Bruntsfield Place – New Works Team
The ponding issue highlighted as “…end of The Meadows… new route to the Innocent” is the same issue as that of the last location noted in the attached PDF. I can confirm that work is nearing completion to install an additional gully at this location, which should remove the water build up following the installation of the new cycle route.

On Bruntsfield Place, and following significant resurfacing works, the contractor has been asked to investigate the sections that are currently ponding and to provide a solution. You can contact New Works Customer Care via transport.newworks@edinburgh.gov.uk for further updates.

North Bridge
As this location has a significant traffic volume, including numerous bus services it is difficult to provide a solution without causing major disruption to the city centre. The City Centre Roads Team are currently seeking a permanent solution, with a view to completing works prior to the start of The Edinburgh Festival. However, it should be noted that remedial works would require special traffic management and could conflict with other priority works. In the mean time a temporary repair will be progressed at the low point to try and lessen any water build up.

West Nicolson Street
This ponding was attributed to a blocked road gully. The gully was last attended on 1 April 2015 and reported as working, however and following inspection we have notified the Roads Gully Team, requesting further investigation and action as appropriate.

Leith Walk
The ponding issue adjacent to the Casselbank Street junction on Leith Walk has been highlighted with the contractor responsible, with a view to rectify water build up. The contractor has surveyed their works and will be submitting remedial proposals to the Council. Further information can be obtained from the City Centre Roads Team via roads.centralvip@edinburgh.gov.uk.

Conference Square
The area is owned by this Council but is not adopted as part of the roads network. Management of the space is undertaken by Estates Services.

The Council is aware of the ponding issue and has been working closely with Standard Life and Sheraton Hotel, who both have an interest in this location.

The problem arises from a defective and somewhat complex drainage system beneath the Square. A jointly commissioned survey and some clearance works have been undertaken. From this survey, consultants have advised of a solution which will involve a significant re-design of the drainage network.

The Council is now examining the arrangements required to proceed, and is engaging further with affected proprietors to progress the necessary works.

"

"You'd have thought ensuring adequate drainage would be a basic requirement for road design, wouldn't you?"

Of *course* not. Drivers won't get wet, so what's the problem?

Rain is a fact of life. Edinburgh is on the east coast so doesn't get that much rain.

Of course unexpected rain when you don't have your waterproofs is a pain.

But the rain stops, the sun comes out and the water flows away helped by the hills - mostly. There will always be places waiting for maintenance; potholes that become mini-ponds and drains that become blocked.

Though CEC has got much better in recent years making sure that when the drain cleaner comes round the sivers aren't covered with cars. Also attention is paid to the ones that get blocked with leaves every autumn.

BUT there seems to be a newer problem. Bad design and/or poor contractors are causing problems often at new dropped kerbs or buildouts, and even where whole roads are resurfaced.

This is currently at the end of The Meadows - created by the new route to the Innocent.

I *assume* it will get sorted.

This is at the foot of North Bridge, no doubt caused by buses (and other heavy vehicles) using the pavement to get round the corner into Princes Street.
