Well done Charlethepar. Closed roads are nice, and it is good that there were crowds out (though with the roads being closed I don't suppose there was much else to do...)

Race was an amazing experience. Water was remarkably warm compared to Thriepmuir, and my swim was respectable. It was lovely to cycle traffic free on a route with lots of country lanes as well as A roads. Little cheerful crowds in every village. Run really tough going, sustained by cola as stomach cramping up. Finnished about half way down the 45-49 men. Happy enough with that.

The surrounding hassle was pretty bad, not helped by heavy rain on Saturday and long queues to get out of car parks.

Looking forward to the (half) Brutal triathlon now, although I'll need to come off the bike n a better state as there's Snowden to climb..

Yeh definitely. I think I will stick to sprints for 2015 though and then maybe try an Olympic distance in 2016.

looking at doing Monikie on 12th July but not got any planned after that; might try one or two more this year.

Ah, good to hear from you, Beano.
Thank you for the update, which does sound at least hopeful.

Your swim was less than a minute slower than mine... Do you think you'll do any more triathlons?

@fimm - using my detective skills I now see where 'fimm' comes from ;-) - I too had a rubbish swim time-wise but I am not a swimmer so I was happy with it 175th out of 250 for the swim). The cycle and run were better (49th for cycle and 29th for run). ended up 27th overall in senior category (you should be able to work out my name too from that info ;-))

on a better note...I think...I heard from a colleague who, through a friend of a fried, was one of the people who pulled the person out of the water. apparently they got to hospital with a pulse, albeit a very faint one. That is good news I hope. my wife and mother were a bit traumatised (quite rightly) by it all as they were performing first-aid right there on the beach for a good 20mins they said. I just hope that the hospital were able to save him/her.

Well, how did you both get on?

Whatever the issue with the algae at Lochore was, it didn't stop the swim.
Unfortunately someone was taken ill during the swim. They got him out and away in an ambulance and I have not heard anything more so I'm hoping very much that no news is good news.

(I was off in the first wave of swimmers, so knew nothing of this until I'd finished.)

I thought my swim was a bit pish, but it turns out that I was a minute and a half faster than last year, so although my still time wasn't very good it was at least an improvement. Hammered the bike (Boyfriend Of Fimm's go-faster carbon fibre deep-section wheels helped...) Run was OK given that I've had a dodgy ankle and have not run much recently. 10th female, 5th female veteran.

Baldcycist yes Lochore Meadows. I've heard reports of lots of people swimming in it recently. Nothing about algae.

@fimm/rem - cheers for the tips. Think i'll start at the back & side and front crawl for as long as I can then switch to breast stroke. I did manage 800m in the open water last week (with a wee rest inbetween).

@charlethepar - doth my cap; a 70.3 sounds a bit brutal. i'll work my way up to one next year I think; the bike/run is fine...just the swimming I need to work on.

I have to register on the Saturday morning for a Sunday start, rack my bike in one place and my lodge my running shoes in another, and so on. On the Sunday, I plan to be on a shuttle bus at 5ish, to beat the crowds, for an 8 o'clock wave start.

Beano, if it's any help, it was suggested that I just do breast stroke - like you this was the one I wasn't at home with. The time difference wasn't huge, and knowing I wouldn't blow out thrashng away at front crawl was reassuring.

remberbuck, that's good. Tri as a sport does I think pride itself in being welcoming and encouraging to all.

Beano, I did my first triathlons on a £200 mountain bike with a rack and road tyres. These days I'm afraid I do have a TT bike (but not a silly hat) though that was from the time when I trained quite hard for some things. You will see a whole variety of bikes being used.

I haven't been in open water this year (cold putting me off...) but should get in tomorrow. I've done enough in previous years that I should be OK. If you are not confident, the usual advice is to start to the side and take it slowly - the field will spread out fairly quickly.

Thanks for asking - i enjoyed it, apart from going the wrong way when starting the run! But the weather was good, the organisation worked, and it was friendly. I'd stayed clear of tris before, sort of feeling they were a bit intense, but happy to report I was wrong in that.

The pre race time went OK and there was enough to pass the time as you said there would be.

remerbuck, the event starts at Stirling Uni?

Agreed, its a bit far from Stirling centre.

However, if you have a lot of time to kill, and cant move the car then take a stroll/ride down to Corrieri's cafe in Causewayhead or for more shops / cafes stroll into Bridge of Allan (jam jar is nice, and there is also a wee cafe opposite popular with cyslists).

Both are very close to Stirling Uni (which is not really that close to Stirling)

The issue with pool based sprints is that they can only fit so many people in the pool at any one time, hence some people have to wait for their turn; but obviously they can't have registration still open once the race has started! Also no one but people who are racing should be in the Transition area once the race has got under way - that isn't fair on the people who are racing. It will probably all be a bit clearer once you've seen it all happening.

I hope you enjoy your race.

There's an awful lot of hanging around between registration and the heat starting, hours!, and I'm wondering what there is at the University for eating and the like on an early Sunday morning.
