I was pointed to this article today which summarises the number's in the USA:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2015/06/16/chart-the-animals-that-are-most-likely-to-kill-you-this-summer/

The media still seems to be reporting every small detail about this crash. I don't understand why they call the casualties of this crash victims but if it had happened on the road they would remain as casualties.

My 67 a day figure was an average for the UK for killed and seriously injured.

Global perspective may just be too much to take. Remember the lesson of the Total Perspective Vortex.

@acsimpson

Apologies if I got the figures wrong. 1.2 million was a figure I saw floating about (forget which year but maybe ~2009).

The rest of the maths is my own:

Divide 1.2m by 365 days in the year: gives 3287 fatalities per day. Then divide by the number of pax on a jumbo (~400) which gives 8.2 jumbos per day.

If the 1.2m figure is wrong, someone feel free to correct it...

I've misquoted that recently, I thought it was only 2 jumbo jets a day. I thought the person interviewed at Alton Towers today had the right idea. Roughly paraphrased as, we would happily ride the smiler if it was open; The most dangerous part of our day is over now that we've arrived.

1.2 million are killed on the roads around the world every year. That works out as 8 jumbo jet crashes every single day!

Imagine if 8 jumbos crashed each day.

Then multiply that up by the family members affected...

Very good point made. Wonder if Haymarket junction needs to be closed until it can be made safe for cycling...

They do.

But it is on the roads, so that doesn't count as newsworthy, or worth anyone's attention. The progress of the average 67 people killed or seriously injured on the roads every day is not breathlessly followed by the media. Their relations do not issue media briefings. The roads are not stopped until it can be figured out how to operate them safely.
