&#60;p&#62;I've been told that they are actually bees and this idea was dreamt up by classically-educated Victorians - the Latin for bee being 'apis'.

<description>&#60;p&#62;I have often thought this and was thinking about it again as more horns blared at a motorist yesterday who was too busy poking at his mobile phone to notice the lights had changed. If there had been a cyclist in the ASL, most likely he would have been revving his engine behind them ready to put the foot down as soon as the amber came on. Therefore cyclists speed up traffic.
