Was in the Liv shop in Stockbridge (EBC owned) last week.

Was (slightly) surprised to see 3 youngish men (presumably staff).

No women want to be involved in bike retail even in this shop, especially in this shop?

“

Liv Bikes is a cycling brand created by women, for women. They design bikes and gear that fit women’s bodies and riding styles, from road and mountain bikes to everyday commuters. Liv focuses on comfort, performance, and empowering more women to ride with confidence.

Liv is the only major cycling brand in the world that’s dedicated entirely to women. Founded in 2008 by Bonnie Tu, Liv was created with one clear goal — to make the cycling world more inclusive by designing bikes, gear, and experiences that truly fit women.

He was at Bicycle Works but now set up by himself. Sorting a lot of e-bikes.

Bleh!
Evans: "sorry due to (cough bullshit cough) 'rules' we don't work on bikes with swytch conversion kits, even though they do speed limiting. Maybe tyr Soul cycles at Tollcross" (he says standing next to a fat bike with battery on the frame at £999

Fettle: "I'm closing tomorrow until December for holiday" (this big a place and only one mechanic???)

Giving up and going to get sarcasmed to death, by the older, wiser, (grumpier) ultimately more experienced engineer at Freewheelin on Slateford because it might get done. I usually would go there anyway this was just because I sit 3 floors above Evans and hoped to get it in one morning and back end of day and Fettle is a short walk to work/home in the middle.

Ok - My tubeless set up -two hunt wheels with tubeless sealant stans needed a clean out and redo with fresh sealant. I phoned EBC and they quoted me 12 pounds per wheel apprx. I dropped off and said just stans sealant replace on both wheels. As I have not used for a while over a year due to injury and the old sealant will be yuk. I was charged 47 pounds today. I mentioned the above and he took off 20 pounds. He wasn't working the day I popped in - but when he said 'make tubeless' - The wheel and trye are marked tubeless. He looked at me and I was stunned- Any way I should learn bike mech myself. It made me annoyed and just fed up. This is my LBC. small rant over TIA for reading

Hope this is the right thread....

A guy has started up a repair and servicing service in Eskbank. I've had two bikes in. Very good service with fair prices. He's exceptionally clear about the issues in hand. Handy for those of us in Midlothian. See https://stusbikeshed.com/

Edinburgh is fortunate to have a range of shops. Try a few, ask for advice, choose one you feel comfortable with.

As Jacquie Phelan says "1 Choosing a Shop - walk into store, making a mental note of your sense of height in inches when you go in. Wait for service, observe the reception you get, talk (if you can get the fellow's attention), then take note of your stature upon leaving the store. If you feel appreciably smaller, do not return. Find another bike shop, and hope for a real human connection, a salesperson interested in what you want to do on your new bike, how you intend to use it."

Edinburgh shops with web sites Alpine Bikes, BG Cycles & Blades, Bicycle Repair Man, Bicycleworks, Biketrax, Eastside Bikes (secondhand), EdinburghBicycle, Leith Cycle Co, Macdonald Cycles, The Bike Chain, The Triathlon Centre, Velo Ecosse.

Bikes are also sold in Supermarkets and DIY stores. Often pretty cheap - you get what you pay for, but will they be able to help if you have a problem?

If you want a second-hand bike with a 3 month guarantee try The Bike Station.

Gumtree can be a good source of local bargains, but - buyer beware...
