I was waiting at the lights on Holyrood Gait wondering why they were taking so long to change.

Then I realised that the van driver behind me had stopped before the junction box, and that the camera sensor wasn't picking me up. The driver was reluctant to enter the junction box even after I started waving them forward, and gave me a big wave once the lights had changed and we were through the junction.

Craig Gordon building services van driver today saw the possibility of a dooring coming up early and hung back - I shoulder check to move out spotting the same but was pleasantly surprised to see they had noticed the same and given me space. Much later I caught up and when the driver was turning left slowed and gave space in case I was coming up the inside - would have been ill-advised of course so I didn't and gave him the thumbs up to turn, but the fact he remembered he'd passed me, and factored the possibility I might decide to go up the inside of his van was much appreciated.

George Anderson & Sons produce van. First of all waited patiently to pass me at Meadowbank until I could move over into the bus lane. Then overtook on Joppa>Musselburgh road by moving all the way into the opposite carriageway. I assume it was the same van. Bit sad that this is so unusual I remembered the name and emailed them to say thanks. Got a reply from their GM saying that their drivers are "put through a rigorous driving supervision to make sure they are up to the standard we require" when they first start with the company.

As a measure of karmic balance for this behaviour, on the same ride and on the A70 approaching the Tarbrax turn from the south a car came up behind me and dawdled along for a good while. It became clear that it was going to make the turn and so the driver had the good sense to wait rather than overtake me and then risk left-hooking me.

I should think their courtesy probably delayed them by 30 seconds.

Good driving outweighed bad driving today in west Lothian south Lanarkshire. Rare.

One instance van screaming by about80mph we interpreted as friendly horn blare. Others all hanging back

One green sports car actually even flashed brake lights at us for moving into single file.

Lots of it about it seems?

Played cat and mouse with an HGVist this morning. He overtook me then I caught up with him at the lights, this happened several times. Could have been terrifying but because of his view up there in the cab he read the road ahead and eased off in plenty of time to give me enough room to maneuver safely. A final friendly thank you wave from me and two deafening toots of his foghorn signalled a mutual respect for one another as our game ended.

Bit late but cycling to right up the middle of Fife to Dundee last Saturday we were genuinely shocked how polite the driving generally was. Maybe I had a very negative stereotype in my head for some reason? Lots of waiting for the perfect place to overtake (to the point where we were worried they'd be furious when passing - never were though) and plenty of big thanks and waves for the slightest bit of cooperation. A++ would mingle with motor traffic again.

I'm lazy so I'm just copy & pasting the video and video description.

SGN Gas driver of van registration LD12GFV this morning heading North on Gilmerton Road. By far the best driving this month, likely this year. I've tweeted SGN to ask them to pass on my thanks to this driver and their manager.

First, he/she doesn't encroach even slightly into the ASL - most drivers will at least plonk their front wheels over the line, especially when the bike box is as need in repainting as this.
Then, I was travelling at around 20 mph on the main road, where the speed limit on this road is 30. I wasn't using the cycle lane because it's full of drain covers, parked cars (only one today), pot holes, people pulling out from side roads, and traffic islands causing overtaking drivers to squeeze you to the kerb, but this didn't appear to bother this driver in the slightest.

They gave plenty of space behind, didn't push to overtake - in fact it looked like they were considering overtaking, then saw the car parked in the bike lane and realised I might need to move out around it. When they did overtake, they did so with plenty of space and at a sensible speed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_NCCgmzmcc

Well, it was Monday’s really. Hosing it down. Windy. Going down Leith Walk at a reasonable pace. Driver of number 11 (?) bus in the lane beside and behind me spots that my way will shortly be blocked (by transit van with hazards on) so signals to let me out. I was really amazed that (s)he (a) noticed my imminent obstruction and (b) went out of his/her way to make my journey a little better. I was expecting to have to stop so was really chuffed!

Last week, cycling through the level crossing at Kirkliston, a car a few cars in front in the queue wanted to turn right into the car park once the crossing had opened. The driver of the car in front of me did not drive onto the level crossing until the turning driver had made the turn, as they would have not been able to clear the crossing while the car was waiting.

Was yesterday actually. Cycling past Watson's at Myreside I was aware of a White Transit approaching from behind - didn't get registration unfortunately. They kept a safe distance behind and when I started to free-wheel to join the queue at the junction, they made no attempt to pass and cruised up to the junction themselves.

Leaving the lights at Gray's Loan, they made no attempt to pass and again sat a safe distance behind, before turning right up Spylaw Road - what a pleasure to share the road with.

Couple of times recently I've had drivers keeping a respectful distance back and not obviously angling to overtake. Yesterday on Woodhall Road being the most recent; I actually slowed and tucked in a bit when there was a decent gap between the parked cars on our side, and he still didn't seem that fussed about passing. The car behind him also stayed a sensible distance back when I moved out again and then signalled right to turn up Dreghorn Loan. All very civilised. What is the world coming to?

@neddie, yes. That way the cost would be entirely bourne by the drivers.

If traffic cameras were allowed to be hidden it would solve the problem of street clutter. It would also have the benefit that no-one would know where they are.

It would be much simpler that government mandated GPS-controlled speed-limiters to be fitted & maintained on all motor vehicles, than constantly adding more & more clutter to our streets.

With the cameras recording average speed cameras could 3 in 5 drivers not still be speeding on it?

They might have measured average speeds before introducing the cameras. Certainly possible, even likely, that 60% of drivers go over the speed limit at some point between the cameras.
