V nice!

I thought perhaps you'd meant other forums for non-bike stuff...

I went down today with small boy to "fix my own" and cannot praise the bike station highly enough. Very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly indeed.

I succeeded in sorting those gears (on the boys bike) plus a few other bits and pieces that needed done on my own. For someone who, a few months ago, didn't know how to change/replace an inner tube, I'm not doing too badly and I'm encouraging the boy to learn as he goes.

It's places like the bike station and <strike>forums like this</strike> this forum above all others that make the knowledge and skills accessible. Thank you! :)

Yup - it is 'fix your own', not 'get it fixed', but the volunteers are friendly and very knowledgeable.

Getting your gears fixed is unlikely to cost more than £10.

Thank-you @ ARobComp and @kaputnik I've had a good look at some youtube videos and I now have a rough idea of what to do.

PS It is the gears I'm having trouble with...!

What ARobComp said - the sessions are busy and the staff available do their best but can't cover/fix everything. For the most part they concentrate on helping those who obviously have no idea or have done something wrong and need it rectified.

If you have an idea of what you need to do and the tools you need to do it, it's good to have an environment with a good workstand, space to work, surfaces you don't have to worry about getting grease on and some advice available.

You need to understand how to use the tools for the most part. The mechanics are very friendly. I would suggest watching some youtube tutorials before you go though to give you a rough idea.

If you're going to be indexing gears I would recommend printing off or writing down some quick notes on what to do for particular problems (like what screw to tighten/loosen etc)

Just wondering if anyone here has used this drop in? I know what's wrong with the bike, and I want to learn how to fix it myself. The website mentions "manuals, tools and advice" available but I wondered how much prior knowledge they would expect someone to have?

(Not very much in my case)!
